I heard about airport extreme and i was wondering does it work in ireland, and if so is it reliable? and does it matter where you are in order for it to work? Like what networks support it?

Well, I do have an Airport question. I've got a 12" G4 Powerbook with an Airport Extreme card installed. We've also got a TiBook with built-in regular Airport. Turning on Airport is, um, fine, but how do you "join" the network? We've also got an ethernetwork up. I tried for instance to share my internet connection with the other computer, but, well, I can't see how. Maybe we'd need a base station for that, but should we be able to fileshare at least?

Yes, you need something to _transmit_ data around the place... as well as recieving it (the airport card).

But if both of the computers recognize each other (like when you Create Network) surely each is both transmitting and receiving?

assuming you're using os 10 make sure that personal file sharing is turned on the the sharing control panel. Once this is done, going to 'connect to server' should give you access to the public folder of your home user folder.

But I see that anyway through the ethernet connection.
    Hm.

Nope the airport card is only a receiver

Um. If you turn Airport on, and create a network on the two machines, each machine sees the other. Each must, therefore, be transmitting some information. It may not have enough power to do anything, but some transmission is occurring.

    You might start a meme...

Yoda this should see the day for you hopefully.

on either of the powerbooks, in the airport menu, create a network and in the other machine that new network should become available as a computer to computer network. It might be easier if you have appletalk enabled on the airport cards rather than on the ethernet to get them to talk to each other but practically it shouldn't make a difference. the key though is that of you want them to "talk" to each other over the wireless network instead of over the fixed network, in the network preference pane, under the network port configurations, drag the airport connection to the top of the list on both machines. This will give priority to the wireless connection instead of the wired one. If you have and internet connection coming into one of the the machines over ethernet or moden you should now be able to share that internet connection by turning on internet connection sharing in the sharing preference pane. I hope this is of some use.

and for those confused out there, an airport card transmits aswell as recieves information. As was correctly pointed out, if the machines see each other they have to be transmitting something.

    :)

    duh!

I suppose if I'd thought about it for more than a microsecond I would've seen my error...

Would it have enough oompf to share the internet connection, I wonder. We'll give it a try.
