Then poor auld publicans are fighting the cause of being overcharged via excise duty on drink.

"Tadgh O'Sullivan of the Vintners Federation is happy there has been no
increase in alcohol excise, but says Irish people are still paying more tax than our EU neighbours. He says that while drink did not take a hit in the budget, there should be a cut on tax for alcohol, as it is so high at present."

It's there own bloody members who are ripping the irish people off.
A helluva lot more the the government is.
This kind of hot-air really pis*es me off.

What pisses me off is that people are still gullible enough to believe it.
It's funny...the most expensive pint before Feb 2002, at a late bar (in Dublin), was €3.90. There has been one increase on beer since then. You can't get a pint for less then €4 now. Tell me that's because of tax. Explain how tax puts a bottle of Coke at €3.
Don't even get me started on German "imports".
How many German (or any other country for that matter) pub owners are millionaires.

Pot calling the kettle black, the government don't want to look like they are raising taxes so they do it indirectly in the true spirit of rip-off. The vintners have been getting away with too much for too long, too many politicians clinics held in their premises and with the ears of one or two hundred voters each, they can influence politicians a little too easily. There must be trouble in paradise for them to turn on their friends,,,smoking ban :)

if the government removed taxes on drink tomorrow, do you think the publicans would reduce prices? they didnt reduce prices when the VAT was lowered to 20%, they are not likely to do so now

will the vitners reveal how much the average pub profit their pubs put on a pint compared to their "EU neighbours"

every supermarket has a huge variety of 1 euro beer bottles at the moment in tesos a bottle of carslberg is 92cent. in pub the same bottle costs up to 5.50 and almost always above 4euro. they should be treated like conmen who scam people out of 1000's with dodgy investment schemes.

    End the monopoly.

Only way to get any competition in the industry.

Yeah, our population is increasing, our drinking is increasing, but there is still a very limited number of pubs, the Dublin area is the prime example. The power of the super-pub owners has ensured that they can make the premium profits on the back of the legalised cartel (ie lisenses). When the smoking ban comes in the politicians will be very slow to give another blow to pubs, don't expect changes any time soon.

    Leave Dublin for 10 mins...

Ok i live in a typical town in the west. it's population is about 5500 - 6000. we have in the region of 48 pubs.

    Pints are still €4ish.
On the other hand there is a little pub just up the road from me that had bottles of miller for €2.40 (you will have to forgive me for not giving out the name of this pub, that would be stupid :D)

How many people own those 48 pubs and are also members of the vinters association?

Absolutely Sovtek. That's the problem. The VA.

And then when an outsider like Wetherspoons come in to challenge the monopoly, every obstacle possible is put in their way to prevent them getting a foot in the door. They spent a fortune of acquiriing that Capel Street site only to meet barrier after barrier to opening up. In the end up they gave up cos of the hassle at a huge loss.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if pub lisenses were deregulated, just like the taxi lisenses were a few years ago. It wouldn't be just Fine gael shouting for compensation for pub owners :)
