    Hmm, obviously not technology then...
Well, if you've been together 5 years, an engagement ring perhaps? :p

Seriously though, if you've been together 5 years then why ask here for advice on "the usual" Christmas presents? - Get something that means something to her. My methodology for buying presents is - if possible, get her something that she can't really walk into a shop and buy (else she'd have got it herself by now, right?).

Also, perfumes and jewelry are more of a "personal" thing, where the person will just think "Oh, I like that!" and we're not likely to pick out the right thing.

    Look beyond the shop window...

    Sinecure.

Donate the money to a decent Charitable organisation (Like Concern!), then give your other half a Christmas card stating what you did, on their behalf !.

    how do I know this?
that's where me ma wants her prezzie to go :D

now, off to after hours as this is not a personal issue as such

why don't you ask each other what you want, that's what we do..
this year santa is bringing me a watch, that' I've picked out, and he's getting a digital speedo(he choose it).

absolute best thing to do ^

Shopping for women is hard work. Better to just drag them along to the shops with a roll of 50's in your back pocket and let em go wild. Makes you poor but keeps them happy :D

Knowing what you're getting for Christmas spoils it imo, even more so when you pick out the gift yourself. The surprise/horror is what it's all about!

Absolutely. Someone getting you a present that you are actually delighted with is the best thing. Being asked what you want or just getting money spoil the whole thing.:(

In all honesty to me its the though that counts, i dont really care what i get even a christmas card would do me. it doesnt matter if its cheap, usless, cr@p, or the best thing you've ever seen. the fact is that at least you get a presy.

Get her a hair straightner, everyone needs one of those. Get a good one, so that even if she has one already it will be better than the one she has so she will be happy with it!

Alternatively a nice idea would be to get a picture she likes of the two of you, get it enlarged, buy a decent expensive frame for it and give that to her (with the picture in the frame obviously!). That would probably mean a lot to her

Don't do perfume, it's a real personal thing with women! Jewelry can be dodgy too, but okay if you have good taste.

Basically listen to everything she says, I mean absolutely everything . She will mention something that she likes, or needs, or wants but doesn't want to buy (note: she will not actually say this, but she will hint it!). Or you can always go with a theme she likes and get her a load of stuff in it. One of my friends loves dolphins, another loves Winnie the Pooh (don't ask!), another loves the colour blue - they might seem like abstract things, but it's always easy to find something for someone if you know their general likes and dislikes!:ninja:

...unless she has straight hair already
(in which case a decent curler is a good bet)

My sister is forever getting Winnie the pooh stuff from people. While she's nothing against the rather camp chubby bear she hasn't got that fascination with the chap that people think she has (in other words, if your friend is called Sheila, ask her if she wants more of this crap:))

hair strightener is a brillaint idea but she bought a fancy one already (christ women like crap)

and i would prefer it to be a supprise,

so i think i'll go with ferdi's idea and buy her a trip somewhere nice, although i am working all over christmas, maybe i could get tickets for something in the new year and give her them on christmas day!

now to get a cheap flight to paris

    thanks everyone who replied

Hmmm.... hair straightener!? Where would be the best place to obtain one of these contraptions?

Weekend away is a fab idea, check out aerlingus ther are doing €1 flights, to lots of places, only on a tue and wed but thats ok if you're flexible.

Alternatively just go somewhere in Ireland, i brouth the better half to belfast last weekend for his birthday, stayed in a nice 4* hotel.
We had a really nice weekend, no stress of aeroplanes just the coll and very speedy enterprise.

    Quack

Try boots, they do some nice ones in there, or failing that try argos cos afaik they sell a fairly wide range, they did when I worked there anyway. Good luck everyone with the present buying!!!:ninja:
