    hi folks

just my own little survey, based on crimbo pressy's bought for "de kids"

don't know the irish retail prices, but ppl feel free to fill in:

bo selecta (complete series 2 r2)

    cd-wow hk €18.28 play.com €22.10 cd-wow ie €24.95

    dido (life for rent)

    cd-wow hk €8.62 play.com €12.41 cd-wow ie €10.95

o brother, where art thou (2 disc r2)

    cd-wow hk €10.95 play.com €13.08 cd-wow ie €14.95

rates are converted from HK$(cd-wow hk) and GB£(play.com) and incl. 1.75% CC conversion charge for AIB visa.

i would be interested to see how much these cost here, if bought from retail outlets (without taking travel/transport costs)

btw, i actually purchased from cd-wow hk(surprise! surprise!)

1.75% CC conversion charge for AIB visa.

I have never paid a conversion charge on AIB visa. If they did I ring them up and tell them to get rid of it or I would cancel the Card.

HMV in Grafton St , ask for items at the CD Wow prices !

could Irishwan get you a wireless connection and laptop or two around there so you could sign the punters up and show them how to use CD WOW Live On Line (after the mob has been kicked out of HMV of course)

Make sure that loads of journos hear about it in advance seeing as the Broadsheets are interested in Ripoff Ireland at the moment.

    hi suppafly:

    ypu ask

"sorry for the ignorance but whats cd wow hk??? the hk part mostly?whats does that mean?"

cd-wow hk stands for the cd-wow Hong Kong site,

    http://www5.cd-wow.com.hk/

where u buy the CD/DVD's denominated in Hong Kong Dollars (HK$).

because of favourable currency valuations, this works out much cheaper than going to the www.cdwow.ie site and paying directly in Euro.

check it out yourself, do the sums and convert by visiting

    http://finance.yahoo.com/m3?u

you can also log-on to cdwow, at either hk or ie and check progress, etc. regardless of which site u used to order.

I'd go meself only I'm just back from Dublin. Muck's suggestion would be a hoot though, and would likely work too.

BTW, eth0's just posted on Business/Economy/Finance saying that a friend of hers wasn't able to use their Laser card on CD Wow HK earlier today. Presumably they could before.

this is a small drawback, but Laser transactions are, and have always been, for Euro currency. (or IR £ as it was)

see here, from Worldpay, used by Cd-Wow:

    http://support.worldpay.com/admin/laserfaq.html

of course using Laser meanz the money is taken almost immediately, but with a CC u have a period, up to 56 days of free credit.

This may sound like a good idea, but I don't know what it'll achieve, apart from the possibilty of bringing more pressure to bear on CDWow.

Earth Station 5 is a P2P file sharing application and network run out of the Jenin refugee camp in Palestine. This is from an article about it in Salon:
Moreover, ES5 has taken an aggressively hostile stance against the movie, music and software industries. There's none of the wink-wink, nudge-nudge, we're-not-responsible- for-what-our-users-do stance that goes on with other P2P platforms such as Kazaa, or, once upon a time, Napster. ES5 claims to be "at war" with the major media organizations. The company actively engages in file sharing, streams unlicensed first-run movies, and claims to have 200 terabytes of "free" music and software it plans to release across its network. And how does it respond to demands to cease and desist?

"Basically," says ES5 media liaison Steve Taylor, "we tell them to go f*ck off."
Be a hoot to do this to IRMA. Smart mob of a few hundred people, meet at IRMA HQ at whatever time, count off 1-2-3:

    F*CK OFF IRMA!

    Silly, but fun.

Cd prices on the .hk site have been increased very slightly to 83.99/105.99/145.99HKD. Still at the current exhange rate these work out at €8.95/€11.29/€15.55, so it's not that much of a difference. :)

I note with interest that prices are roughly a euro cheaper on the German cdwow site than the Irish one. Will they accept orders from Ireland?

i just got a westlife cd for my mum for xmas from cdwow.ie (didn't know about .hk:rolleyes:) for 13 quid odd, and it was actually shipped from hong kong which surprised me till i read this thread.

I guess i'll be going to the .hk site from now on.

just a thought, but why not nip into the shop upstairs at the back of stephen's green shopping centre and get the flyer stuck on a bunch of t-shirts for maximum exposure.

I think to highlight it more, you could change the cdwow.ie prices for the .hk prices so people know exactly how much they are losing out.

also, if you were planning to do this next saturday, I'll come down nd help out for a couple of hours if you like. maybe we could get few more people together and get a bunch of t-shirts printed up for everyone (if we can get some funding, or people would be willing to pay for their own).

i hope i'm not imposing, but i was about to go to stephens green anyway so I'll pop in and get some prices for t-shirt printing, and a timescale for getting it done, although I don't have a printer, so I can't give him something to work from (maybe Kali if you have the time in the week, i dunno).

again, sorry for imposing but it's a great idea and i think it could go very well.

update: g/f made me go to Penneys for an xmas tree cos it was cheaper, so I didn't get to the t-shirt place in stephens green to find out prices.
I'm working out in ballsbridge at the mo, so won't be able to get into town this week to find out either. maybe someone else might be able to nip in and ask.

btw, gonna change my sig for a bit of advertising, see how that goes.
