Rip-off Ireland in the news

Well it was on the front page of a couple of broadsheet newspapers yesterday and even the National competitiveness council are shouting about rip off ireland. Joe Duffy had programs on it, five-seven live had a series of programs on it and most media outlets have probably taken up the topic over the last couple of weeks. It is very promising to hear people speak of the alternatives of online shopping, and going up north for saving money. These types of things must surely be scaring retailers here. Even the lame-duck ad from the government on shopping around is at least publicising the issue. This is a good chance now for irish consumers to get their say on things, but the thing about christmas is that no one has the time/energy to shop for a lot of presents for family/friends, find something that works and then go to every other shop in town to get the cheapest. maybe for one or two items but not everything, especially with the crowds.
The prices are still a rip-off in many instances, the media spotlight is on rip-off, what now?

Derek Davis will soon be presenting a programme on RTE (called AFAIK Rip-Off Ireland) which will compare prices around the country and compare our average prices with those of other European countries.

There should be an Irish version of Watchdog or something like it.
A good show wouldn't just compare prices...that'd take one show. It should investigate rip-offs and underhanded dealings of companies.

Interesting idea, RTé would back out of it though any time their license fee came up for discussion, maybe TV3 would think about it if they have recovered from the losses that seem to have been made on the Dunphy show. Like the old wind-up programs, hidden cameras...you aren't serious about charging this price are you? Yes well i'd just like to let you know you're on camera and the whole nation now knows about your rip-offs

:p I like that star gazer

RTE presenting a program on rip-off ireland, when one of the biggest rip-offs in the country is the TV license

I suspected that something was probably a bit rotten around RTE as well.
[OFFTOPIC]Weren't they supposed to have pumped out new programming contingent on the TV License hike. All I see are more and more American sitcoms and more and more commercials.
    Oh Yeah...Bachelors Walk *SNORE*[/OFFTOPIC]

Christmas sales down on last year?

could it be that people are finally not going to accept the rip-offs anymore? Maybe there is hope for Irish shoppers after all :)
