Any OSX broadbanders in here?

    Hi,

I'm still contemplating broadband, and will eventually do something about it (before Xmas?).

Does anyone in here have broadband? Which supplier? Have they been OK about OSX? I realise I could post this in Nets / Comms: Broadband, but there's so much traffic in there, it might get better replies in here. What speeds? Ethernet or USB modem? Wireless compatible?

    Thanks,

    H

I'm using virgin.net dsl with osx, i'm using a netgear wireless dsl router, had no problems at all. You might run into problems getting support...support people don't like macs too much :)

    sorry - I was being over Dublin-centric.

Is this service available in Dublin, where I live?

No, virgin is UK only. But listen, you'll have no probs with osx and bband. Why'd you think you would?

Running OS 10.2.6 - got IBB installed about a month ago. Pretty much a platform agnositc process. They put an aerial on your roof and an ethernet cable in through your wall. Plug it into your network card, enter your IP address in your network preferences and you're connected. Easy peasy. Also remember to turn on your firewall - it's under Sharing, I think.

I've since connected mine to a wireless Netgear router and am beaming the signal around the house to a G4, an iBook and a PC :D

Running OSX Server and Panther OSX 10.3.1.
Supplier Eircom, Ethernet modem to 100Mbps switch to 2 Macs.
Apple Airport Ap and Laptop with Netgear Wireless Card for around the house etc. No Broadband/OSX issues, works great.

Using NTL broadband with OS 10.2.7. No problems whatsoever with installation or usage, although I've only had it a couple of weeks. Only available in certain areas, however.

Running OSX 10.3.1, and various Windows OSs
Using IrishBroadband since the start of the year
After they install you get an ethernet cable to stick into what ever you want :), together with your IP, Gateway and DNS addresses
I plugged mine into an Airport Base Station and works a treat

Have set up a couple of Mac people with Eircom Broadband, with various modems, their current Netopia Cayman works grand

i have an os9 iMac running on NTL broadband and im hoping to have OSX on it soon. will be running though a router. any os that has TCP/IP is capable of connecting to broad band though ethernet either direct to the modem or to a router. not sure abuot the USB connections though. only some broadband connections support macs that way, but they all support it the other way.

    P.S.

Another factor is that I have an Eircom PhoneWatch system in the house, and I've been trying to figure out if I can do the self install thing...

Seemingly no, despite the excellent tutorial elsewhere by Redshift. I tackled Eircom about the discrimination against PhoneWatch customers and here is the reply I got:

    hello hugh
If you went for the broadband you would not be able to get the self install option.

You would have to get the engineer install of 169 euro but we give you 10 euro off per mpnth rental for 12 months.

Whick looks like an engineer install for 169 - (12 x 10) = 49 euros. Or does it? Isn't the first month rental-free anyway?

I'll try calling him (the bloke in Eircom) tomorrow.

Interesting to think about "considering" broadband. For me there was no question. It is far far cheaper than dialup, given my usage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 897 ✭✭✭tonky

Ditto for me, paid 626.00 Euro. (2 bills) last month, a large chunk of that dialup. Broadband should be a Godsend bill wise, a no brainer really, with 24/7 access. Don't know how I managed without it !.

I was 'considering' because in a previous life in California I was accustomed to uncapped (and faster) cable broadband for a lot less than it is here, ergo the wait. I'm also used to making the right decision at the wrong time, no sooner than I sign up, the speed will rise and the price will drop.

How do I determine how fast my broadband is? Hm. In Network Utility under Ethernet Interface it says Link Speed 100 Mb. That's it, right?

When I ping u.tv, I get an average of 40 ms.
When I ping www.unicode.org, I get an average of 155 ms.
When I ping www.apple.com, I get an average of 188 ms.

I am not sure how to interpret this.

    Hi Hugh,

Currently using Eircoms offerings for Broadband since July, have 2 Mac's networked via Airport and both have no problems using the broadband.

The modem I got is a netopia camen 3300 series and works without problems.

    All the best,

if you go to www.downloads.com and do a search for macromedia dreamweaver and select it to download, one of the options is clock this download. it will tell you a speed. im getting about 500kb/s. im on NTL. also, download it. sometimes their speed test and the download its self are different speeds. im getting 78.6KBytes/s.

their current one is the Netopia Cayman 3341
    ref eircom dsl support

it has both ethernet and USB (always use ethernet), have also set up with their supplied Zyxel 645 although that had no PPPoE built-in but the Airport took care of that, and with a D-Link DSL-504 (for a wired only set-up).

I don't find such an option there. There's got to be a better way of determining speed that that. My question stands.
