For those who share a passion for wanting to fly a jet fighter you can with http://www.flymig.com/packages/this company. $11,000 to fly a mig.... but it does include breakfast.

SU-27, oh yeah. Wonder if you'd get them to do that cobra maneuver.

AND there's $100 off if you order now, maybe this should be moved to the bargains forum:D

Some day I'll have more money than sense and do something like this.

I'm off to Florida in april on my hols. During my visit I'll be doing this. Not quite an SU-27 but it's only €160.

Sweet. Wonder if I could get my hands on a Messerschmitt 109 or a Stuka, the Germans had all the best planes. Maybe even a Focke-Wulf-190.

Single seaters in operation but there are twin seater trainers. I'm sure if you tried to 'fly away' it would get realisitic real quick.

The test pilot in the rear seat may have an objection to you flying off to another country. Have you never seen Foxbat with Clint Eastwood?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,758 ✭✭✭Peace

I saw a program where some lady did this...on discovery if i remember. They flew to the top altitude of the fighter and it was literally on the edge of space....the sky above them was stars rather than sky blue.

    Would be col alright.

Am I alone in dreaming of owning a Spitfire? The plane that won the Battle of Britain, twice as manoeverable as the Messerschmitt...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭Mick L

The spitfire has IMO the nicest lines of any plane in WW2. However I'm sure we could have a whole forum dedicated to which plane was the best/had the most impact in WW2 e.g. there were far more hurricanes flying during the battle of britain than spitfires.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,683 ✭✭✭daveg

Nothing like the sound of a spitfire. However the Tornado below would be my personal favourite.

    tornado2.jpg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭Mick L

The tornado is ...alright, a bit of a brute though, not all that fast, quite heavy. Loud though (as I'm sure all jets are up close and personal). While I was on a diving trip to Scapa Flow (North Scotland) we were on one of the islands passing time between dives and out of no where a tornado appeared and screamed past at low level. Very cool. But if you want to talk about nice looking jets, I have to admit that the Americans produce very quality planes. The F-18/14 and especially the F-15, it's got the looks and its got the moves.

Tornado has a maximum speed of mach 2.2 (2335 km/h or 1450 mph) compared the the F-16 2.2 Mach & F-18 mach 1.8 or 2125 km/h. however the F-15 is the fastest of the 4 with a top speed of 1650mph. The Tornado also has a variable geometry, swing-wing arrangement which allows it to take tight turns (wings swept forward) and high speed (wings swept back).

As far as I can remember though the FA-18 Hornet is renowned as the worlds best fighter jet.

HAHAHAH pisses is right, that's all it can do, it leaks so much fuel on take off it needs to be refuelled before it can go anywhere. Also it's unarmed and tbh I never really liked the look of it that much.

Indeed. It actually shrinks by approx 1 meter at cruising altitude due to the heat on the airframe. It fly's at Mach 3 (2200mph) and is the fastest plane ever.

It does not need any armament as it can outrun a missile (and has done on many occasions). However the blackbird is a reconnaissance aircraft like the U2. Not a fighter jet.

I presume the plane was actually called foxbat though, which is prolly where your coming from. :)

Actually the plane in the film was called the firefox, the FoxBat is what the 'West' calls the Mig-25 which is basically two monster engines with a cockpit and 2 wings attached. Fastest plane at the time I think.

Hmmm. Yeager and the rest of the guys who flew out of Edwards AFB might disagree. The X-15 springs to mind... some guy flew at over Mach 6 in that thing if I remember right.

Now if you meant "fastest production plane", then you've got a case for the Blackbird :)

Are you sure they actually let you fly the plane? Seems to me like you just get to be the passenger. Doesnt flying one of those things require an awful lot of training?

Forget the blackbird - messy, what you need is something that doesn't need to be refueled four times per mission and where you don't need to be wearing a space suit ...

    The Great White Bird

    http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/modern_flight/mf37.htm

BTW: it was the hurricane that won the battle of britan - Spitfires were better planes, but needed more maintanance where as the simplier hurricane could be put back in the air much sooner - also AFAIK the hurricanes shot down more german planes than all of the other defenses combined.xb70.jpg

It EXPANDS not shrinks and not by as much as you say.
The SR71 was based on the YF? which was a fighter and had Hughes Falcon? semi recessed missiles.

XR-70 is faster over long distances 'cos it don't have to refuel and Mig 25 (built to shoot down the XB-70) and the SU-T4 aren't that much slower.

Anyway the Shuttle does Mach 17+ on re-entry... and has the longest range...

Get a decent PC, F-16FLCS and TQS flight system and a copy of Falcon4.0
Then install the patches and the latest SuperPack.
Fly around for a few hours in a Su-27.
Then hop behind the flightyoke and have a bit of fun, try and avoid stalling her, blacking or redding out and let the pilot handle the landing and take-off.

The Su-27 is a lovely machine. The yanks can't build anything like it, too much digital fabric between the pilot and the control surfaces.
Takes balls to fly Russian jets.
    Massive respect.

I knew someone was going to contradict me with the X-15. The X-15 is not actually a plane it is a rocket... albeit a "manned" rocket. It has to be flown on the under wing of another aircraft to the desired altitude and then it is dropped. The rocket then flies at Mach 6.7 (4,520 mph).

However, as I said before, the fastest jet in history is the SR-71 (Blackbird).
Are you sure they actually let you fly the plane? Seems to me like you just get to be the passenger. Doesnt flying one of those things require an awful lot of training?

Yes you actually get to fly the plane. The test pilot takes off and lands the plane but you get to take the controls (for only a few minutes I imagine). It's not difficult... you wouldn't be doing high turns or loop the loops or anything.

It EXPANDS not shrinks and not by as much as you say.

I didn't check the full facts on the expansion but having checked the facts the Blackbird's hull expand's a few inches, due to the emense heat applied to the titanium frame and skin.

Also the shuttle is a rocket not a plane.

On re-entry it's a glider. Not a very good glider, but a glider nonetheless.

No that's the fuel tanks leaking (on the ground, the joints in the tanks are open so when friction heats up the plane them come to a neutral stress / strain position).
