Internet Service Providers and Trace Routes

    Ok Boys and Girls.

    Here's a question for everybody with in the Irish gaming community (be that Quake 1/2/3)or otherwise).

    What are everybodies thoughts in regard to isps.

    Who gives the best service / connection speed / low ping etc?

    Currently, using a Club Internet the minimum number of hops I get to Barrysworld (for example) using a 56k modem is 8 (traceroute on gamespy), using Indigo and an isdn connection I can reach barrysworld in 1
    Is this because of Indigo or the isdn?

    Given that renewal date is coming around real soon its time to make some decisions.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated!

    Boy replies

    Tinet=best (Dont know if its now the same service as Eircom)
    Esat=okay
    Oceanfree=crap

    Thats what I reckon anyhoo.

    Eircom - Best usually
    Iol - v. close second
    Esat - good most of the time (although the fact that their calls are flat rate more than makes up for this)
    Indigo - repulsive (best isp of the year my 4rse)
    Oceanfree - good idea, shame about the bandwidth
    ClubI - not even worth considering smile.gif

    atm i'm using tinet/eircom for playing before 10pm, and ESAT nolimits after 10pm.

    from about 11pm on the pings on ESAT are oh so sweet and oh so ****ing cheap smile.gif

    Ill try to answer your traceroute issue.
    I think(without checking) the Club Internet is not a real provider, they are probably a sub provider. That means that they uses some providers backbone. Gives many hops. I suppose Indigo has a real provider status, and that gives them a shorter way to the resource you use. It has nothing to do with kinda access you use, it depends whos network you attach to. I tried to explian in a simple way.

    Best regards

    Traceroute in Gamespy is ok for a quick jobbie.

    But if you want the full lowdown about the servers between you and X server, you should use the Windows 'tracert.exe' followed by either the DNS name of the server or the servers' IP Address.
    (eg: tracert www.ign.ie)

    It's nice, you can see just what server is fuking up your connection along the way.

    Esat surf nolimits are ****E between 7.00 pm and 11.00 pm. Completely ****E.
    Especially if ure not near Dublin.
    However , after 11.00 pm the isp and phone lines are uncrowded and Esat comes into its own , giving very good and stable pings!
    So use Esat late at night!

    I never really hit anything over a 160 ping
    no matter when i play on esat.

    can get to 140 after 11pm
