IRISH companies' treatment of their customers online is lagging well behind the standards set by firms in the US, according to a major new study of Ireland's top 100 firms.

The study found that of particular concern was that 17pc of top Irish companies share or sell data without getting permission from the user.

Over half of Ireland's leading firms didn't respond to online business inquiries, versus 31pc in the US.

One in two top firms were found to have no privacy policies, versus just one in ten in the US.

As a result, the study gave Ireland's leading companies a mark of 5.3 out of 10.

This was well behind a score of 7.0 for comparable firms in the US on internationally recognised benchmark, the Customer Respect Index (CRI).

CRI measures how well companies overall treat their customers online.

The study carried out by web marketing company Elucidate showed Hewlett-Packard topping the list in Ireland, with a score of 8.9.

Groceries and clothes retailer Dunnes Stores took last place, with a score of 2.0.
