Planetside FPS

Right, got planetside yesterday. I havent stopped playing it - I love it.

However, I'm getting approx 80 pings with my DSL connection which is damn sweet but I get approx 50-72 Frames Per Second (FPS) but when I go from inside to outside, or during a big firefight my frames drop to as low as 0.4-3.2, which makes the game rather unplayable (I still try).

    Anyone got any ideas/tips?

    I'm running :

    Win 2k
    DirectX 9.0b
    P4 2.0Ghz
    256MB DDR-Ram
    Geforce 4 Ti4200.

Its annoying as hell so any help would be well appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

Shouldn't drop that low, make sure you turn off flora, for both graphical and tactical reasons, it makes the grass grow and wave about - one blade at a time - lorra lorra rendering !

Everybody turns it off because then you can see the people in the long grass !

Don't even think of getting core combat - it adds nothing and the patch slows down your FPS.

What faction do you play ?
I play Dex (VS) on Werner and FisherMangle (TR) on Konreid. The Konreid char is part of a pisstake outfit called the fishermen, just create a char with fisherman in the name and come along to annoy yanks !

It the amount of ram you have. You need at least 1gb to be able to play PS smoothly.

Right, I'm off to komplett to order 1GB of RAM.

But seriously, how much would I need. Its got a minimum spec of 256MB Ram, but then it has a min of 56k Modem so it beats the hell out of me.

You need 1 gig of ram to make the game playable. It use's 700mb of ram at any given time and this is what is causing the slowdown.

I have upgraded my pc from 512mb of ram to 1gig of the stuff. And its like playing with a new computer. No slow down what so ever in BF1942 and other games that had slow down before i got the ram. I would say that everone should have 768mb of ram to play games "Today" and 1 gig of ram to play games "Next Year".

also if you want ps to run really nice i suggest a 128 mb card
64 does the job but since cc came out ps is alot more demanding

Well my 512MB Ram arrived yesterday and I have to say its ALOT better. I think I'll upgrade again to 1024MB RAM as soon as I can afford it.

And btw, it is a 128MB graphics card.

Even at 512MB PS runs fairly slow when in an area with a lot of action. I upped my machine to 1GB and since then im getting a nice consistent 30-80fps in PS now.

The Core Combat patch doesnt seem to have affected my performance either. I know when it came out first there were plenty of people complaining about fps issues but this has all being sorted. Havent been down in the caverns much but you cant beat killing the smurfs and VS with a maelstorm :)
