was buying a replacement headphones and remote for my sony minidisc. i ended up buying them in a electronic place in herbert place [ the name escapes me], got them there from €50.

later on i was in the jervis centre and decided to go into the sony centre there to see what the price difference was, just as a matter of interest. i asked the guy and he showed me a pair of remote headphones [the exact same ones i had just bought except a different colour], he said they would cost €65. not any more than i had expected, sony are generally known for being that little bit more expensive. i was about to leave when he said €65 for the remote, and another €39 for the headphones.

my jaw hit the counter. thats €104 for a pair of headphones i had bought for €50.
theiving gypise bastards. id say if the guy wasnt japanese he'd be selling his gear out the back of a hi-ace.

I used to work for these a**hole's a couple of years ago. Here's a little bit of inside info, the Sony center's in Dublin are a franchise and are owned by the Peat family (as in Peats The World Of Electronics). The guy who works in the Jervis center is a son of one of the owners and is a complete nob-head.
I seen the mark up's on their products and they are huge on the like's of a pair of earphone's. The Sony Centers can and do charge what they like for the stuff the sell.
My advice is stear well clear of these clowns and buy your stuff on-line or in one of the independent retailer's.

When I bought my (Sony) camcorder not long ago, I did a price check in a number of locations.

I eventualy bought it in Dixons in the Jervis centre for €100 less than the Sony centre just opposite! Yes, €100 cheaper - €449 instead of €549. Even cheaper than any online price, and cheaper than Dixons in the UK. I kept price watching fro a while and it seems that to avoid being outpriced, the Sony centre removed that model from sale in their Jervis centre outlet!

If you keep your eyes open, Dixons often have ridiculously cheap offers that they don't really advertise. But I only ever buy these offers - most of their prices aren't so competitive.

hmmmm I also went to the sony centre in jervis center a few months ago to price a minidisc player with radio plugin. He said it was 389 euro. Feck that i said, went and bought it on amazon for 240. Outrageous difference

On a lighter note, someone's opening a "Sony Centre Gallery" on O'Connell Street in Limerick soon.

"Gallery" conjures up one of a number of things:
    • a place where one of a kind items are on display. You can't buy this item anywhere else so it's here or nowhere, regardless of price
    • a place where the items aren't one of a kind but for various reasons including framing and so on, you might like to purchase there, almost regardless of price
    • a place where nothing's unique, where the /exact/ same stuff is on sale in the place a few doors down for cheaper and only people who don't know better will buy stuff there (as prices are higher partly because of the name (people paying for a bag) and partly due to having to clawback franchise fees) - everyone sane uses it for a quick look before buying at the cheaper place
Guess which category the new Sony Gallery in Limerick is likely to fall into.
