anyone tried getting a mac dmg file mounted on a linux box or os9? i have a few dmg files here that i downloaded with linux but want to use on the mac (since there for the mac) and i cant figure out what to do. when i downloaded them from apache on the workstation to the mac they where registered as txt files! even if i can get it to burn the image to CD (since they are CD Images, right?) i could then share them over a network. any thoughs?

.dmg executables are for os x only. No way to get them working on os9. Completely different os.

No....you could run them on an OSX box...this is like asking can you run a linux tarball on windows 98. They're two completely different OS's, it's not going to work...

Well actually, a linux tarball file can be read under windows 98 (or pretty much any os for that matter) since its a compressed file. you can download the GNU tar program off the web or use winzip to do it. but apart from that whats in it is different. so im guessing that DMG files are like self extracting zip files or something, yea? its like a binary that has the compressed archive build it? Hmmm. now i need to find some one with a mac! Ohhh, and i found a page last nite that said that opening the dmg file under osx and converting it can be done.

Yes, but can you run the program you get when you untar the tarball on windows? No, no you can't. That was my point.
Maybe someone else here can help you, i'm really just an OSX person :-/

They will open in disk copy 6.5 11b for OS 9x, mounts CD images fine. (I think there is a 6.5 13b too but couldnt find it)

you can find it on limewire or I believe that the developers site for apple has it if you sign up.

They will burn with toast too without a bother.

Some DMG files will burn on a PC with the newest version of NERO if the extention is simply renamed to .ISO as Nero will burn Mac images and multiplatform CD's anyhow.
can i convert them on an OSX box to an ISO?

Generally toast images can be burned in nero too by changing the extention

Anyhoo Works for me, I was having the same trouble for weeks until I found this verison of Disk Copy.

    laters
