Stratovarius are really good (and about the only band in the genre that i know) - never really paid attention :ninja:

Yeah, I like Iced Earth, Blind Guardian and the like.

You should go and listen to Nightwish as soon as possible, if you've not already.

Big fan of power metal myself, particularly the likes of:

    Sonata Arctice
    Nightwish
    Hammerfall
    Freedoms Call
    Lost Horizon
    Kamelot

You really cant go wrong with any of these bands really, some superb stuff out there if you look for it, recently I encountered 'ElvenKing',who seem to be another great power metal band.

get yerself some Primal Fear and Symphony X!!!!

cudnt be arsed with Man'O'War tbh, much i love Joey DiMaio as a musician i just find them quite borin

the thing i love about power/symphonic metal is it doesnt have any of this fake hatred in the songs, a lot of other types of metal have this really lame emphasis on hating stuff. ill take Slayer as a pretty popular example, now dont get me wrong, i LOVE Slayer but no-one can live a life about the stuff the lyrics are talking about. its against human nature to be hateful and utterly negative all the time. Deicide too would be anohter good example

its a pretty hard idea that im tryin to get across here but id be happy to try to elaborate on it a bit more.. reading back its seems quite vague but maybe one of you can interperate for the everyone else

Hmmm, I've been enjoying it for a while now

Are In Flames erm...'Epic Metal'? I've got Clayman and its pretty bloody epic sounding if you ask me. I mean, what is this power/epic/symphonic metal you speak of? Whats it sound like? Are the lyrics all about slaying dragons and riding damsels and kool stuff like that? Is it the sort of music you feel brave listening to?

    This is Syd_Vicious speaking...

Power/Epic/Symphonic metal is a very underappreciated genre compared to some of the others (death/black metal being a prime example) and is a genre of metal which I always enjoy listening to with Symphony X, Kamelot and Nightwish being the standout bands for me

The thing about power metal though is that when it's good, it's very good but when it's bad, it's very bad

Example: Stratovarious, most people seem to love them but I can't stand them...that vocalist is just so damn whiny (the high notes he hits are real cringe-worthy) and the drumming...what the hell is up with that drumming, it just wrecks my head after a few seconds, it just never bloody changes!

Despite that, power metal is great, a genre I fully recommend to any metal fan to listen to...you will be pleasantly surprised ;)

In Flames are Melodic Death metal, 'epic metal' tends to be higher pitched, happy (and occassionally inhumanely fast).

And yea, dragons, knights, elves etc get mentioned very regularly in some Power metal bands (Elven King is a prime example), some just have the style of power metal without the whole dragons thing (nightwish for example).
