Looking for the name of a substance. When you add it to water it breaks down into carbon dioxide and ethanol..

Sometimes used to fizz up cheap wine.

Anyone know what it is called ?

AFAIK you have to pay excise duty on it :(

i found the following quote on this site and posted it on another ages ago

    http://www.polishvodkas.com/

the site looks totally different now so i dont now if the quote is still there

"Today we know that vodka does not have to be a liquid: it can be gelled and consumed that way (Polish patent no. 170637)or, taking it a step further, manufactured in powder form (British patent no. 1,138,124). It turns out that the sugar contained in milk, lactose, has the ability to absorb ethanol, making a powder to which powdered flavorings can be added. Mixed with water it becomes a flavored drink."

lactose should no fizz up wine though. lactose can be got in health food shops. maybe you are thinking of something else. i am a member of several forums on drink and have never heard of it other than that site

Not quite that an addition's (And 't would give you a nasty hangover)

    The one I'm looking for is C4HxOy + nH20 --> C2H5OH + CO2

    http://openwetware.org/wiki/DEPC
    * DEPC in unstable in aqueous solutions. It hydrolyses quickly to CO2 and ethanol.
    ...
    * The fruity smell coming from ageing DEPC-containing solutions stems from the esters that are generated when ethanol produced from hydrolysis reacts with residual carboxylic esters. It is normal that some fruity smell lingers after DEPC removal and is not necessarily a sign of incomplete DEPC hydrolysis.

Cool, just add water to get a fizzy, fruity alcoholic drink :D

Diethyl pyrocarbonate (DEPC) is an efficient, nonspecific inhibitor of RNases.
    ...
    * DEPC is carcinogenic (it carboxymethylates purines) and should be handled with care. Wear gloves!
OK may not be such a good idea then :(

It is carcenogenic as it reacts with bases but when it is fully reacted with water..... might be safe but honestly i wouldn't trust anything coming from a food lab
