My government will maintain its commitment to increased equality and social justice by bringing forward legislation on the registration of civil partnerships between same sex couples.

From The Telegraph:

Civil Partnerships Bill
Thought likely to grant gay partners the right to take on the same legal status as married couples in matters such as inheritance, parenting and pensions.

Although the envisaged civil partnership is expected to fall short of a full "gay marriage", homosexual men and lesbians who adopt the new status will win the right to be treated as next of kin and to be exempted from testifying against one another in court.
