Here's a prequel for ye. It's not actually released yet, but it's around if you look.
Whilst looking for reviews I found out there's an animated sequel (to Ichi The Killer) made also.

    http://membres.lycos.fr/gorezone/dvdcrypt/reviewstxt/mno/1ichi.html

I wasn't gone on the first one, but it's a movie you have to at least see, so I'll give this a watch too.

Sorry, had a look there, couldn't find it. I came across it by chance.
The jist is it continues on from where the movie lets off.

The reviewer wasn't too impressed, felt that it was too over the top (even though he really liked the original). Too much animated blood and semen!

As far as I know Takashi Miike (director of Ichi The Killer) actually does the voice for Kakihara in an animated Ichi The Killer `film' which is pretty cool.

It's not available to rent in Ireland is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,530 ✭✭✭patch

I don't think it's around anywhere except on the net Jeff.
Unless I'm wrong, tis a bootleg copy that's for sale.
Seen as you can't even rent the first one, you'll hardly ever see this one.
2001 video shop down past GPO tend to get in more obscure stuff at times though, so you'd never know......

Wasn't Ichi a manga story and then made into a film ?

ichi the killer was shown as part of the IFIs horrorthon weekend last halloween there.
didn't see it though, my delicate constitution is not quite up to a full 48 hours of gore at one sitting.
might it be available in laser or somewhere, i've rented
audition from them before and they have some reasonably ott stuff.

also happiness of the katakuris (another miike film) is on in ugc by the looks of it this thursday.

It was on last Friday in Galway, the Galway Film Society showed it.

Dear lord, it was terrible. I couldn't even salvage any irony from it. Needless to say, there were a rake of otakus there who liked it...

Robbo, you manage yet again to utterly astound me! Just when I think that I've absolutely no respect left for you, you go and say something contrary to all good taste, that just makes me loose respect for you so much that it's just going into negatives at this stage.

It's not meant to be an ironic film, it's meant to be an absurd film. You do understand the difference? Surely you might have picked up on that from the completely bizarre opening sequence that had absolutely nothing to do with the narrative of the film at all. Surely you must have found mirth in the inept con-artist 'Richard'?

Or maybe you just dont get humour that isn't ironic, or in some way sarcastic?

Would Have to agree with Angelwhore
Maybe Ichi wants to make absurd films to show society and throw it back in their face - if you know what i mean

Mind you have not seen Ichi The Killer
Just saw DEAD OR ALIVE bloody hell
thats all i can say kinda got lost in that film

anyone with a insight to it please explain

Ichi is a character. Takashi Miike makes the films.

    Yea ment that

    Honest

I do know what you mean, Ichiro, despite the mistake Mak has pointed out.

Dead Or Alive is a good example, and while I do consider it quite a poor film as far as Takashi Miike's work goes, it's an enjoyable film, and quite a head****. Rather nasty Yakuza type film following a cop, then
it went all Dragon Ball Z!!!!?!! WTF?!

While Dead Or Alive didn't really seem to make much sense to me at all, I do find that generally Miike (and quite a few other Japanese films) does have good storylines that do make sense, despite being quite absurd. Ichi is a person favorite of mine, and while I didn't quite get it at first, once it clicked with me, I thought it was absolutely fantastic!

But anyway, on the topic... I'd love to get my grubby little mitts on the Manga.

Must get around to seeing Ichi, only Miike film I've seen so far is Audition. Other than that my experience of Japanese cinema is limited to Takeshi Kitano films. Not that that's a bad thing though... Actually come to think of it I did see a film called Gonin by Takashi Ishii (all these directors having nearly the same name is a bit confusing...) - bought the DVD based solely on the fact that Takeshi was in it and probably got Ishii the director confused with Ichi the character confused with Miike the director... argh my head hurts. Anyway does anyone know of Ishii or any of his films? Just wondering if anyone else has seen the movie; wasn't too impressed meself.

Back on topic, I still need to see Ichi...

Haven't seen Gonin myself, but here's something you might want to keep an eye out for. A Takashi Miike film with Takeshi Kitano acting. :D

Sorry AW, but what exactly is there to get? I must've missed something. I watched the film once, and the ultra violence amused me. I didn't see any amazing story there though, aside from the obvious masochism! Maybe I'm even wrong there.

I went on to watch with commentary to see if that'd give me more insight as to why the film is so loved. I switched this off after a short time, as the dudes were just shítin on about Quentin Tarantino, how they'd pretty much forgotten what's going on themselves and how the cum in the opening sequence is real!!!

So... can you clue me in anymore. Please don't reply with "Watch it again!"
I'd actually like to see your take on it and how it "clicked". If it's simply about a bullied kid who enjoys violence, then it's a pile of crap IMO.

As long as you're admitting that, go watch it again!

    Here's why...

If that's what you thought, then you obviously weren't paying attention to some very key scenes. I think that if you missed the scene where Jijii is telling Karen that Ichi was never bullied at all, and that he was only hypnotized into thinking so, so that Jijii could control him.

If you missed that much, then god knows what how much more you've missed.

So if you want, if you think that there's more to the film, go and watch it again.. But hey, if you dont like it, then you dont like it... And no matter how much you've missed, there's probably not going to be anything that'll change your mind on the subject. But if you're open minded enough to give it another go, then feel free.

No need to be a príck!!!

I'm asking AW what he took from the film because I recognise him as quite the film buff. I'm not slagging him, you or anyone else here. So why tell me my opinion isn't worth much! Eejit.

AW. Some key points in my previous post....
If it's simply about a bullied kid who enjoys violence, then it's a pile of crap IMO.

You'll note the IF there. I believe you've watched the film numerous times, and enjoyed it, therefore I'd value your insight into it.

I didn't miss the fact that he was never bullied at all... but still, bullied/controlled, it's very similar... and produced the same/desired results.

I will watch it again, not for a while, as I'd like it to be fresh again.

Statements like "obviously weren't paying attention" aren't helpful, they're snotty remarks. I genuinely asked for your opinion, so thanks for the majority of your post as it was genuine.

I actually bought the DVD based on the reviews it got here.... but if the reviewers turn out to be as full of shít as Mordeth, then I reckon I won't bother. An' there's me thinking people didn't take the píss and insult each other on the films board.

It's the kind of film not everyone will like, so Dr Loon's opinion can't be wrong, it's an opinion.

I don't like recommending this film (and a few others like Happiness of the Katakuris and Versus) unless I know the person likes these type of films. It doesn't have general appeal. I personally think they're great, love these films, they're so surreal and they don't apologise for all the violence in the film, but I can see how others wouldn't enjoy it as much and might get annoyed at the way some parts don't make sense or don't fit in, or the pace of the films.

There's no right or wrong, it's all about personal tastes. I wouldn't have any qualms about telling people they *have* to watch Memento (even if they lose the plot and don't realise what's going on) but this is a whole different type of film/genre and isn't as easy to recommend to just anyone. My mother *loves* horror films, but she probably wouldn't like Ichi The Killer because she's say it "doesn't make sense".

Sorry if I sounded snotty, but it just came off like you didn't pick up on the scene.

But yeah, leave it for a while...
    That's probably the best idea.
