Aib Atm Charges!!!

I've been out of the country for a while but since returning I've started getting charges for using the ATM to withdraw money.

They do this in Oz and New Zealand and I used to think the people were mad for putting up with it down there. Next thing I know I'm back home and AIB seem to be doing the same thing. They charge for lots of little things like:

    AIB ATM withdrawl charges:
    NON-AIB ATM withdrawl charges:
Electronic Transaction Charges (ie. Using their online banking)

    and a few others.

I have just got a bill for over 7 euros! What the hell is going on?

I've mentioned this to my friends and they all seem to think AIB is the only bank doing this as they assure me their banks don't. I have friends who use Bank of Ireland, EBS and one who uses Ulster Bank.

I can't imagine AIB being the only people doing this, but if they are they can rest assured they're losing me as a customer, preferably before the due date on these stupid charges!

Anyone have any info on this? I'm not bothered changing banks, AIB have been quite retarded on numerous occasions so a decent reason to change is fine with me. Only thing is, as stupid as AIB are I can't imagine they're the only idiots with these charges...maybe they're the only people being up-front about it and my friend's banks are all charging but keeping it secret!

    Please help!

As far as I know they're the only bank who charges. It's really annoying. I had only just moved to them having decided to move from BOI and Ulster Bank because they were crap. But at least they dont charge you for ATM use. AIB even charge me for moving money between two accounts i have with them _in the same branch_. Weird.

Take a phone and call them. That'll give you way more answers than posting here.

Also, If they are the only ones charging make bloody sure you change your bank.

If I remember correctly, BOI also charge for all of these (and any other 'transactions' you initiate)28c a time, but do have an €11.40 'flat fee' which covers up to 90 transactions per quarter (i.e. one a day).

My bank fees are regularly €10 a quarter, per account (I've got 3).

AFAIK they all charge about the same. The one charge that really gets me though is the one where you are hit for a missed standing order - €12.70 will be charged to the company that is billing you (say, O2), who then pass this 'adminstrative charge' back to you.

In fact I have even had occassion where my Bank has taken their €10 in fees, rendering my balance too low to accept a direct debit, thereby incurring a €12.70 fee.

Is it any wonder both major banks are experienceing record profitability?

    Open your eyes, people.

If all the above is true then it might be EBS for me, as far as I know they don't get the same charges.

And 28 cents?!?!? Wow, at least AIB only charge 20 cents ....I can't believe I just said that.

Student and postgraduate accounts are 'immune' to such charges. If you have one of these, everything seems rosy. Once you move onto a normal account though, they screw you for as much as they can. Getting loans and finance is easier when you have a full account though.

Student accounts & OAPs are exempt from banks charges. Otherwise, there's general charges for over-the-counter transactions, especially with any type of current account. Most banks will take an annual fee to cover all atm cards, any transactions, statements, print-outs and such. But some banks chose to send you one big bill every so often & take the money from your balance. Permanent TSB have an offer - if your average balance in your current account is €1000 or more, you're automatically exempt from bank charges. Worst thing is....say you're really annoyed with the bank charges on your current account & so you tip along into the bank to close the account.....upon closing the account, you get charged AGAIN!! It's like an extra little maintenance fee! The cheek!!!

I swear though....if you moan enough when you're in the bank, they'll let you away with anything! ;)

With a Bank in America : my account balance dropped below 50 dollars (I didn't actually really use the account), but they started charging 5 dollars per month for having a low balance. In a few months - I was going to owe them money !

also: re: complaining enough in a bank and getting away with stuff...
absolutely, my dad literally talked his way out of the 11E/quarter bank charges.

I've lots of arguments with AIB about charges. Once I get a chance I'll switch to another bank. What alternatives do people find good to deal with?

I'm with AIB as well but i've a student plus account, the only charge is the 5euro the government take wankers, everything else is free, i take full advantage of that whenever i can ;)

I'm with AIB too and my last quarterly bill was over €8 :(

The only advantage is that I can lodge money in the local post office, which is handy considering the only day i'm off is Saturday.

The stamp duty for non-laser atm cards is E10 per year. If it a laser-enabled atm card, then you pay E20. The stamp duty on a credit card is E40. Thus because i have one credit card, one atm card and one laser-atm card, I pay E70 in stamp duties. And you have to pay it, because you have to have an atm card to access your accounts.

I've a student card so I avoid these charges.

The only strange thing is, given that this is my 6th year at uni (wow, dosen't seem that long!), how do they know I'm still a student? I could have started working and they wouldn't know anything about it!

students still gotta call into the bank to get "Student Banking" on their ATM card.
    took 2 mins with TSB.

before that, I was charged for every transaction aswell, and more for using it at another ATM [AIB, BoI etc]
