So, are there any bands out there in Ireland following in the footsteps of Katatonia, Anathema, Opeth(damnation style) etc. There seems to be a wealth of death metal, nu-metal etc. but is anybody writing music in the vein of the aforementioned bands?

Just started a new band in that style, the 2 guitarists have 4 songs fully done and the songs are fairly long ( all over 6 minutes) so we just have to jam them out, and hope to be ready in the new year to gig, myself and the drummer are already in ShermanM4, but this new band is totally different in style....Opeth comes to mind.
I will let ye know when we are fully up and running!

    My own band, Enraptured.

Rather more Black Metal really, but there's definetly a big Anathema/Opeth influence.

    Nothing recorded unfortunatly.

It'll be interesting to hear these bands in the future. My own band have taken a bit of influence from the likes of Paradise Lost(newer stuff), Jeff Buckley, Katatonia - not many in the metal circle seem to be taking this route, therefore it's quite hard to find suitable bands to gig with..... at the moment. I think this could well change over the next few years

there isn't an incredibly large market for it really. a massive section of the "metal community" just want slayer-esque bands.. or for the younger up-and-coming metal fans, they want slipknot-esque bands. there isn't a huge market for intelligent, decent, good metal around ireland...but things do change, occasionally :)

Who is it that plays sort of Melodic Death Metal? Is it The Swarm? They play some excellent stuff.

Yeah the swarm can be described as melodic death metal - although their new stuff is totally vicious.

Hmmmm... I remember seeing a band like that at the Gasworks a few years back. Irish Doom Metal they considered themselves. And i don't know about good, but they sure as hell had me in stitches! :D
Mainly cuz the singer had his face painted like a viking and kept yelling stuff in Irish! Then came the keyboard solos! Which, altho amazing to hear originally as he warmed up, sounded cack in the songs! :D

Any chance of a commercial release of the new ShermanM4 tracks? Possibly in lieu of gigs? Dav said the new stuff was pretty fucking insane :)

Waylander are by far the best trad metal band imo, if not the best irish metal band.
Reawakening pride once lost is an awesome album.
