Sky+ to DVD burning - possible?

I've just installed Sky+ - working great (no phone connection needed).

I would like to create DVDs of some of what I've recorded, is this possilbe to do?

I have an Apple Powerbook with a DVD burner. Is there any way to record from the hard drive in the sky+ box digitally?

I do have an analogue / Digital converer (Miglia Directors Cut Take 2) but don't want to lose quality by converting.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Problem with recording staright from hard drive is that you are recording encoded data, you would have to play it back through the decoder to get a picture so not very practical I'm afraid.

Wow, I didn't know this! That's a bit of a disaster then. Would I be right in thinking that if I were to record something from Sky One for example, removed the card and tried playback, it won't work?

I guess to get the best quality, you'll need to connect recording device to RGB Scart socket or I think there's an SVideo output on the back of Sky+ boxes.

    yeah

    but this can be handy

like record a film or 2 from Film 4 and then when you finally subscribe to it you can watch what you have recorded. ditto for Sky Movies. handy if you only subscribe for a month or 2 at a time

    Thanks for the replies...

How would getting a DVD recorder fix this problem... is the same problem not going to exist?

Also, anyone know how to install extra Hard Disk? (I believe you can intall up to 120GB)

Anything special I have to do to record RGB - is that scart to the 3 leads (sorry don't know tech term here) and make sure RGB is chosen from sky setup menu?
(I thought svideo gives better resolution/more lines)

Well it would still be an analog signal yes, although with a DVD Recorder I doubt you'd notice any difference in quality between what's on your Sky+ hard disk and the DVD. It's a good second best to ALL digital, plus you can connect up the digital audio out port on the Sky+ digibox and record your movies in Dolby Digital 5.1 :D

What kind of money are these dvd recorders going for now and where would be a good place to get one. I'm lost since Richer Sounds closed down. I've been trying for a while now to get from sky+ onto my pc. Results haven't been great so far, so I might bite the bullet and get a dvd recorder.

I have a Nokia 9902 with 120GB drive in removable caddy outside reciever. Dont know about the plus box but the Nokia stores recordings in standard Mpeg. I remove drive from caddy, plug into pc, tranfer files (1 for video, 1 for audio)(there is filtering of unknown streams done also), convert the Aud Sam Freq. from 44 to 48khz (dvd requires this), no need for transcoding of video (takes 5-6 hrs for 3 hrs video), instead I change header data in the v mpeg file. this takes 3 minutes. Then I use Scenarist 2.7 to create dvd, which uses a templete (made earlier takes a week or 2) (when your learning), which takes about 30 minutes (this includes 15min burn time).. Thats to fit 2 films on the one dvd with title and menu buttons making selection.. Hope this helps as it took me a month to get it right.

Problem with the DVD Recorder is maybe a slight loss in picture qualtity (re-encoding a decoded mpeg feed, the hd recorder simply stores the original stream. Also it takes 3 hrs for a 3 hrs recording for every backup that you make!! The other way takes <25min for every full dvd.. :)
