My kind sys admin has said..YES...you can play quake2 after work. In order to do so he is going to open up the firewall to the quake2 specific ports.

My question is ...does anybody know what the range of ports are ( if there is a specific range) for quake2 and on what protocol does it run?

Not sure about Q2, but QuakeWorld uses tcp/ with udp packets on ports ranging from 27500-32000. Alternatively check with ID Software, I suppose.
