The DURC Air Rifle Open is currently going on in the UCD rifle range in Belfield. Shooting on Thursday and Saturday was very light compared to recent years, with only 14 entrants so far. Currently leading the field is UCD's ex-captain, Emma Lyons, with 549, closely pipping DURC's Michael Madigan with 547. Kate Fanning, also of DURC, is trailing in third with 540. The interim scores look as follows:

    14. Shane Kenny D UCDRC 46 65 57 59 62 62 351

However, the "big guns" are due to shoot tomorrow, including Olympic shooter Rhona Barry and International shooter Nicola Murphy, so things are far from over.
There are some photos, but they will have to wait till the phone line is fixed - I'm told Monday...

Meanwhile, maybe Emma's scores will be of interest:

The DURC 2003 Air Rifle Open concluded today in UCD Rifle Club's range in Belfield. First place after a comeback in the final was Rhona Barry of Wilkinstown Target Shooting Club, a well-known face in the Irish and International target shooting communities, who shot for Ireland in the Olympics at the Atlanta Games and who recently returned from representing Ireland in the European Airgun Championships in Guthenberg, Sweden. Rhona scored 578 in the qualifying round and was pipped by another familiar face, Nicola Murphy (also from WTSC) who scored 579 in qualifying, but couldn't maintain that slim lead through the finals. Nicola thus just misses out on her hat trick, having won the Open in 2001 and 2002. Third place went to Liam Spillane (again from WTSC) who shot 573 in the qualifying round and went on to hold third place through the final.

DURC shooters taking prizes were Michael Madigan (first place, Class B), Victoria McDowell (first place, Class C), Nithin Tharakan (second place, Class C), and Jan Creighton (third place, Class D). Congradulations to them, and we hope this means that they're going to continue to attend competitions in the future.

I've got a fair few photos, which I'll get developed, scan in and post here over the next few days...

Well, the photos are now in the lab being developed, but I do have some interesting stuff to show first, screenshots from the RAPSO (Rifle And Pistol Stats Office) program that we use to track the scores during the competition.

First off, the final results for the Championship:

    And the different classes:

To see how the winners in different classes were shooting, here are their individual scores screens.

    The top three overall shooters:

    Then Emma (Class B winner):

    Victoria (Class C winner):

    and Brendan (Class D winner):

And then there was the ten shot final. Here the top eight shooters shoot a further ten shots, in a rather regimented fashion, with the scores announced after each shot. This year, not every shooter returned to the range to shoot in the final, so the next shooter down the list would be asked to shoot in their place, as so:

The scores from the qualifying round and the final are added together to determine the overall winner. Here are the scores, shot by shot...

Then on shot two, I moved ahead of Helen Meade...

And on shot three, Helen retook seventh place. At the same time, Rhona took first place from Nicola...

Got the rest of the photos developed.

DURC novice shooter Rebecca Leonard at her first competition.

    15.jpeg

Rebecca again, working on her 426. For a first competition, that's not bad at all. But she's still dropping her head to the rifle! More training needed Rebecca!

    16.jpeg

    An excellent PR shot though.

DURC's Ammo&Equipment Office, Michael Madigan. Michael has a decent, solid position, but he's also dropping his head...

    19.jpeg

He put in a 547 in the end - 2 points less than Emma, but he overtook her in the final to take back fifth place.

Terry Wearen working on his 547.

    25.jpeg

Terry's in the Irish Army team, but soon after this photo left to serve with the UN mission in Liberia, and won't be back till July, so he misses the rest of the Air Rifle season.

    26.jpeg

This is Declan Kelly. Currently the best male air rifle shooter in Ireland, though his 564 was well below his normal level. He's just back from representing Ireland in the European Airgun Championships.

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

    27.jpeg

And this is me. Dropping 24 points from my normal level to shoot my worst competition in years.

    28.jpeg

This is what happens if you don't train! 531! Argh!

    29.jpeg

Nicola Murphy (in the bobble hat - it was freezing!) and Rhona Barry, shooting in the last Detail. Nicola put in a 579 and Rhona a 578. They're currently the best air rifle shooters in the country.

    30.jpeg

Nicola and Rhona again. While Nicola won in the Qualifying round, Rhona clawed back the lead in the Final to take the overall first place.

    31.jpeg

And for that, Rhona receives the Simon Kennedy Air Rifle shield (at least for this year, it being a perpetual trophy).

The various winners from the competition. Left to Right: Victoria McDowell (first place in Class C), Nithin Tharakan (second place, Class C), Liam Spillane (third place overall, third place in Class A, and first place in the Juniors), Nicola Murphy (second place overall, first place in Class A, and first place in the ladies), Rhona Barry (Overall winner, second place in Class A, second place in the Ladies), Michael Madigan (second place in Class B), and Emma Lyons (first place in Class B and third place in the ladies).
