Only 6 places in Europe in the top 50! Not 1 in the top 10!
Tis a bit biased towards far off destinations imo.

Hmmm, I'd love to see the pyramids.

I'd have put the Gallapagos in the top ten and nepal or china especially peking and the great wall.
New York and Sydney are amazing places alright but not the type of wondrous places for this kind of top ten-methinks.
But then this is another BBC poll I s'pose from the people who brought us the poll saying that the Wolf tones A Nation once again is the best song in the world closely followed by several Indian/pakastani ballads...

The Great Barrier Reef deserves it's number two spot, totally stunning and is home to the number beach in the world -Whitehaven.Forget any other beach you have ever been to nothing compares to this the views .the warm crystal blue sea and the texture of the sand ...it's like walking in snow ! Truly amazing !! These types of places may expalin why Europe doesn't have the same votes :)

I have been to 24 of the 50. But there are many places not on the list, which are in fact much more impressive.

But I guess, it`s always difficult to agree on this kind of polls...

Because the poll is made up of presumably all British votes, most people are going to vote for 'once in a lifetime' destinations. While Europe has many great destinations, British people don't consider them once in a lifetime destinations because due to proximity, they're not.

I haven't personally but I know a few people who have (& they're not all friends with each other, it would have been unrelated trips).

Cusco and the general area has been on my "when I have some money" list for a few years. Admittedly it just looks like a mutant Skellig in the touristy pictures but it's certainly the kind of place that people seem to go to as part of a world trip and rave about when they get home.

I wouldn't have put Cape Town in the top 10 to be honest. It's a few years since I was there (debating trip, cost me all of 100 quid) and Table Mountain was nice and it's a lovely drive along the coast on your way to Cape Point (or the cape of good hope if you're nutty enough to do a two hour walk for pretty much the same thing) but top 10, er no. Cape Town itself hasn't got a great deal going for it.

I was a little disappointed not to see Miyajima on the list. Perhaps it hasn't been a destination for the British, though it's well known in Japan. Absolutely stunning, it's well-regarded as one of the most beautiful places in Japan (and Fujiyama is for tourists). You can take in Hiroshima on the trip as well for the educational thing and temples. I went to Miyajima the day of the fireworks display (every August) and it was excellent, though the place is lovely enough that you could go at a less crowded time and even enjoy it more (we were among the few gaijin there). Go before people actually find out about it.

(of course if you're actually into fireworks, you go to Osaka at the start of August. They have 120,000 of them - there isn't a bigger display anywhere)

I reckon that Exit is right in saying that many of the votes were for once-in-a-lifetime style trips.

What are you talking about? Haven't been there personally but its a massive tourist destination as part of the Inca trail people climb the mountain to the city, i'm sure some people on boards have been there. I plan to do it in the next few years hopefully.
