after reading this thread over on the cable section i wonder what the odds are on Sky getting us BBC3, BBC4, BBC News 24, CBBC and CBeebies on the EPG. this surely increases the chances by some bit

it would be very handy, much better than Other Channels :(

It shows that the BBC are not restricting their digital UK services purely to the UK. Being FTA on satellite, we are just lucky to get the signal because of location. Its good news for NTL customers, this was done by design, and putting them ahead of Sky Digital, for once.

As for placement on the EPG, I watch lots of News 24, but to me, its only one keystroke more than an EPG position, 5 Live and Sports Extra are two and three more. Placement on the EPG would probably make me watch BBC THREE and BBC FOUR more!

i was thinking more along the lines of using the channels with Sky+. EPG placement is crucial

Oops !! I accidentally started a second thread on this subject. (Sorry)

And yes Mossy, I totally agree about it being much handier for use with Sky+

The whole "cable rights/satellite rights" situation is getting even more complicated !!

By the way, NTL still also have BBC World. The NTL digital service is beginning to look quite attractive (at least in Dublin).

I would be guessing but, it could mean NTL are expecting UTV to arrive soon on Sky digital here.
    A pre-emptive strike.

If so then it would have been NTL who were proactive on the digital BBC's,Sky might be looking for some cake to put them on, more cake than might have been agreed with NTL, and therefore not worth the hassle for them considering they are on other channels.

Sky may well be holding out on the UTV decision before adding new channels. If they add the 6 extra BBCs and UTV all at once in time for Christmas sales, then they look great, and are well positioned to demand a new year price rise.

If UTV don't come on board then they may well add the channels anyway, but the case for making a sub rise is far more tenuous then - all they are doing is making it easier to see what is free anyway.

Fair play to NTL all the same. I wonder did they have to agree terms / pay BBC?

as mentioned by DMC on this thread, the BBC are not aiming these channels exclusively for a UK audience anymore. i await the ads for NTL on the radio telling of these channels being available on their EPG. it does make me think that something is due to happen regarding an ITV appearing on the Irish EPG. Sky have to get the extra BBC channels on board because extra BBC sounds attractive to some folk and all i want to do is be able to use them for Sky+ and i am sure that i am not the only one. i will post any reply i get from any emails

Lots of posters have suggested this, but I can't help thinking it's a bit late in the year to launch any advertising campaign for Christmas based on the above?

How long does it currently take from ordering time to installation of a new Sky Digital set-up?

Also, the whole UTV by Christmas thing seems to have gone very quiet - I'm not holding my breath.

I emailed BBC Worldwide regarding BBC3, BBC4 etc not being on the Irish EPG last week and got this reply...

Thank you for your email regarding the availability of BBC digital services
    in the Republic of Ireland.

Viewers in the Republic of Ireland who have the necessary satellite dish and set-top box or integrated digital television receiver can receive the BBC's digital satellite broadcasts as part of the multi-channel package offered by BSkyB. However, as you are already aware they only transmit BBC ONE and BBC TWO.

This being the case, can I recommend you contact BSkyB and register your interest, as they will have to negotiate the rights to broadcast these channels. You can contact their sales department on 0818 719 841. I hope this information will be of some use."
