Hi... i have another question about moving to england .. but i made a new thread so people will c it !!

When your getting a NI number how long did you guys that have already been though it have to wait .. did you have to wait long get a emergency number?

How much do they they take from your wages .. since i'd be renting a place and doing unskilled kinda jobs this is a big deal for me ... if i was getting £180 pre emergency tax how much would i be left with afterwards ...

What kinda questions did they ask you at the interview ... has any1 ever been turned down a number ?

How long were you waiting to get a interview ? If your gonna be working in London does that mean that you have to get a appointment with the DSS in London .. ?
Do you have to have a UK address ? coz i was thinking of going to the north or wales to apply for a number before i actually move to england..seen as i don't like flying and sail&rail takes all day .. this i thought would be a good way of getting my NI number b4 moving to england ..as driving to the north or going into the DSS in holyhead or whatever would only take a while and i'd be back in Dublin within a few hours :)
anyway some please help me with a least some of these confusing questions!!

    thanks :)

Dont worry its all very simple!, no seriously it is. First of all, theres alot of red tape over here so dont blame the messengers they hate the system as much as you will, that Im sure of.

You get an emergency NI number pretty much immediately, which will bve used to tax you at emergency tax rates. Go to a job centre, as these do everything not just job listings. I think they are called DSS centres. Now I was told it would take six weeks for my number to be issued. Then a week later I went in and said I had a job lined up and they needed a real number cry cry and they pushed it through in 3 days. Try that line, be polite and happy but persuasive and you should be fine. I had to go to an interview, which was in an interview room with cctv cameras, glass window between me and interviewer (most likely bullet proof). Basicly she went through the form I filled out and didnt ask shag all questions. The reason for this is that you are Irish and because of the "special relationship" there is no way an Irish operson can be denied a number so it is mundane. Interview was short. No problems dont worry about it. Make sure you point out this to anyone in the DSS centre you speak to because most dont know this and will send you to immigration in the home office like I was, but Im not bitter, not bitter at all :)...

Then when you get this number you are away. As for tax, whne you have a number, its hard to judge. You get taxed I think 20 or so percent, so that would be about 33 quid of 180. But hold on, as its a low wage they do have structures in place here to hardly tax that. To be honest with you, go to London, you get paid double that for working in a "low paid" job. I only know london, but you can get nice rooms in nice houses in good areas starting from 65/70 a week.

If you need anymore questions answered just ask, more than happy to respond. I learned the hard way over here and wouldnt wish it on anyone. If you are looking for an ordinary job, the job centres have loads of them.

thanks you been very helpful .. :)
a few more things ... you said "with this number you be taxed around 33 quid outta 180 pounds .. is that with emergency tax on a emergency NI number or on a real NI number .. ??
When you went to the DSS were you given your emergency number .. there and then or did they post it out to you after a few days ?.. Did jobs interviewers not want to know you before you get your emergency number ?...
And finally you said you know London ..
Are there lots of DSS places around in Central London?
someone suggested before living in Shephards bush .. I don't this person very well (i actully don't even think they 'ed be bothered showing me around)
so is it a easy enough place to find your way around?
how far is it into Central London on Bus/Tube .. i prefer bus .. i think the tubes a good system .. but i prefer bus :)
    5 minutes 10 minutes ?
How are people with you been irish over there...i heard lots about predujuice but never experenced it in England myself .. but then i've always just been visiting or on holidays or whatever ..most have been friendly and said they liked ireland or whatever ... but maybe its different living and working there ..
How was it for you? ... and finally .. why did you come back to ireland?
    thanks :)

I'd love to know how you're planning on living on £180 per month in LONDON! :)
I just moved back to Northern Ireland so there was confusion as to whether I already had been issued a NI no as I left when I was 12. In the end they just filled out a new application form, and my NI card was posted out to me within 2 weeks.

As for tax, is it not more like 25%? 21 tax and 4% national insurance contribution (same as PPS)?

The emergency number isn't 'issued', it's just sex, dob, first letter of name, so it could be f010181B. Like in Ireland, you don't get hit with mega high tax rates for a month or two, so don't worry about it.

As for attitudes to the Irish....there's rafts of Irish working in London, the place is a complete melting pot, no one will be bothered. This aint the days of 'no dogs, no blacks, no Irish' :-)

i was supposed to be going with this girl but she was too long about finding a place over there .. when i told her i'd leave it until after Christmas .. she suddenly was like "o my friend has found somewhere for only 240 a month between us .. (yeah right) i was thinking it must be in a really bad location or some hole! .. but anyway ... i see alot of accomodation for rent in london thats like £ 60 or whatever .. hopefully food/bills/transport would be too much on top or that so i think i could live on £180 a week .. i will eventully get a better job after a while but i guessed becoz of my age anf experence i might only get bad jobs in the beginning and it might take my a longer while to find somethin good :)
Also i 'd never go to somewhere without savings ... so thats that :)
i thinking of not goin till around march anyway..i only know the touristy places in london .. and walking around places in dark december that you don't really know .. is probably not a good idea for a girl alone!
if anyone can think of anymore stuff to tell me please do! like waht places to avoid .. what clubs and pubs are good .. whats it like at night trying to get cabs .. etc etc thanks :)

national insurance is currently running at 9%
dont know what the lower tax level is, but i think its about 22%.

as for the attitude to the irish, its fairly much like a case of 'oh i was in dublin once and i loved it'. with the amount of foreign people in the UK, they tend not to be as racist as the irish and they certainly couldnt give a whoot about what happened in ireland for 800 odd years.

That sad to say is because we dont have clue what we did in ireland for the last 800 years :( - ireland doesnt get a mention in our history lessons.

Having said that I dont think you'll find too much of a problem us english love the irish - especially the ladies. Its the accent that does it methinks ;)

Im pretty sure there is a 10% tax rate on your first 10k or so....

Trouble is my info is 4 years old now..so things might have changed a little.

And its as the other posters have said - there is no such thing as an emergency NI number - you are just taxed at emergency tax rates until you get one. Your employer should make you fill out the relevant forms when you join.
