    Korea plans ultra fast broadband
South Korea is embarking on a huge project to make its national broadband network even faster.
The government and telecommunication companies will spend 2.1 trillion won (£1.06bn) to upgrade Korea's network.

When the project ends in 2010 the top speed of South Korea's core broadband infrastructure will be 100mbps.

Sigh, Our governemt still seem to be stuck struggling to break 512k :(

I read that article earlier today. I believe it is fibre-to-the-home, as xDSL technologies are limited to ~50mbps.

P.S. Did you know that in Japan, 80% of the population is no more than 1000 metres from their next telephone exchange? This is how they can have 26mbps ADSL2 (for people further away, 26mbps falls back until the connection can be maintained).

That is very, very far indeed from being the only reason. For example with regards to exchanges, they had to put in a lot of additional "exchanges" to do that. It was not like that from the beginning.

Because in ripoff-Ireland, you'd need 10billion to get the same deal!

Didn't say it was, just pointing out that in Japan land is at a premium and their patterns for urban and rural development are far different to us, which may have resulted in a large portion of people locating within range of an urban centre. There are allot of additional "sub-exchanges" in Ireland, mainly are still analogue and can't handle ISDN let alone xDSL.

Alright, so it may not be possible to implement the same 26mbps broadband package everywhere in Ireland. However, is 26mbps that important for us? Bear in mind the government's target was only 5mbps. Also, ADSL2 can "fall back", so it simply won't deliver 26mbps for people who are further away from their next exchange. In addition, street cabinets can be used to bring users closer.
