All outbound connections go through a squid firewall - that's grand. i have firebird set up so i can view the net. but i was wondering is there anyway to do this with lynx other than recompiling it as socksified? TBH i couldn't be arsed to recompile it - but if needs be then i will..

Usually Unixy programs like lynx will respond to the http_proxy environment variable... so something like:

    export http_proxy="http://myproxy:8080"

will do the trick. This also works for the ftp_proxy variable too.

The environment variable will work for you,
or you could use links instead.

Just try links, it does almost everything lynx does, and loads more
(Not as handy on authentication, but does frames and some javascript).

It also has a menu (ESC) where you can enter your proxy details.
Running it under X or fb, if compiled accordingly, running
links -g will even give you a graphical browser.
