Phone connections required for new SKY subscriptions

    Hi.

Can anyone answer the following 2 questions (preferably those in the know who connect up first time SKY subscriptions)

Do all new SKY subscriptions require a phone connection for

o Initialisation of SKT Card and BOX upon first connection..?

o Continuous phone connection for the 1st year of the SKY subscription..?

The reason I ask is that I have a friend living in Germany who intends to get SKY connected in Ireland when he is home for Xmas and then take the box and dish with him to Germany..

However if SKY require constant connection to a phone line then he is in trouble.

    Anthony.

Not if he buys an out of contract box, second hand etc, no phone line needed, subsidised boxes from sky need to be connected for a year to qualify for the cheap box.

The phone line is only if you get a subsidised box from $ky. If he or you picks a secondhand box from say e-bay then the phone line is not needed. I bought a subsidised box in Ireland 18 months ago brought it back to Belgium activated the card with a mobile ID switched off an all worked out.
Maybe they are more strict now Maybe someone can comment!!!.:confused::confused:

How strict are they with the phone ? I would have to run a cable across the middle of my living room floor (wooden floorboards), between the phone and digibox and would basically be installing a tripwire if that was the case. Can I put it in for the installation and then pull the plug ?

I would say plug in for initial installation. Then plug out. If you get a letter saying its not plugged in then you can take further action. From what I hear they are only strict with the people have a $ky+ and second box mirror subscription. As the second box is less expensive than the first box subscription. Hope this of help!!!.

No you cant I'm afarid, sky will firstly recover the installation sharge subsidy from the retailer and then come looking for money back from you. A permanent connection must be installed.

Not so JD, they are clamping down on all installations requiring phoneline. Best bet is to buy a non sub or second hand box

How often do they check ? how do they check ? is there anything I can do to transmit the phone signal without installing a lethal trip wire in the living room ?

If I am looking for a second hand box and dish, what should I be on the lookout for (makes, models, items I need etc......)

Quigs Snr go to http://www.maplin.co.uk and do a product search Wireless Phone Line Extender that might be of interest, not sure if you can get them in ROI. I know someone else on The Board got one!!!.

I suppose you couldn't get a longer cable and run it around the wall? I can't think of any situation where that isn't an option.

How often is random , how they check is they send a signal to the box to instruct it to call back, this is done at install and approx 5 days later and then it depends on whether you use box office or not. Panasonic is the best box in my experience, stay away from Pace and Grundig.

I agree fully with Tony, get a Panasonic if at all possible. I'm not familiar with the new Pace digiboxes though, as we stopped installing Pace boxes after the high failure rate of the 2500 series. Panasonic are much much more reliable. Since we started using Panasonics about two years ago, I'd say less than five had to be replaced.

My living room is huge and the phone and TV are about as far apart as you can get, I measured last night that I would need about 56 feet of cable to run around the wall. Under the flooring is not an option as it click laminate.

What a pain in the arse. Looks like I'll be giving Sky a miss then.

I bought one of these last week in anticipation of getting Sky+ in...it works fine here in Ireland. They also sell them in the Maplin shop in dublin but are almost twice as exnensive there as on their website which I gave the shop assistant an earful about.

In Blanchardstown shoppng centre you will find Maplin next to the Eircom shop.
Maplin indeed do a wireless phone extender, but it is priced at 140 euro (about two months ago. )
In Eircom shop next door they were selling the SV1500 Wireless Phone Extender for 109 Euro. Seems better quality as well.

I'm happy with it, works fine for Sky. No need to run a ugly cable around the room anymore. :)
