Digital camera Sticky?

    There seems to always be a thread about digital cameras.

    How about a sticky that is a kind of beginners guide to digital cameras?

    I don't really know the basics about resolution etc...

    Can anyone tell me what exactly does "4.0 megapixel sensor" mean? Amazon.com says i can make prints 11 x 14 with 4.0 megapixel sensor but what does it mean? How good is 3x optical zoom ?

    Currently looking at a "Canon PowerShot S400 4MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom" but I'd like a camera where I can control exposure and switch between manual and auto-focus with digital zoom and flash that costs less than €700. Any suggestions?
