I was just wondering, what type of research screensavers are people using ... ie. Cancer Research, or even the SETI one

Well there is a boards team on the UD Cancer Research project. Check it out and join up here http://www.grid.org/services/teams/team.htm?id=7B148F5C-3FAD-4BD1-AD50-24D74B6EA65F

Er ... I really didnt want to take this offtopic, but that one is for a laudable cause (find a possible cure for smallpox) but it says the results will be sent to the Department of Defence (should it be called the Dept of Attack?, I dont think they have actually defended their country since the day of pearl harbour)... which I dont agree to, it being the organisation (or one of them) spending the most on bacterial and chemical warfare research in the world .....

So I am asking for more candidates that dont ...er affect the sensibilities of people... is that a good way to put it?

Please dont let this thread wobble offtopic too much ... I'd really like to put those unused CPU cycles to some good use that may one day be beneficial to everyones health

In your control panel, you can choose whether or not you want to be sent the work units for SmallPox. If you have this set on, every second unit will be SmallPox, every other will be for Cancer. I myself chose not to do any work on SmallPox for similar reasons to yourself so every unit I do goes on the Cancer project. Only the results on the SmallPox project end up with the U.S. Dept of defense...

Feck, I hadnt noticed that, not exactly out there in the open is it? ... already uninstalled the damn program:rolleyes: ....
So now the next problem ..... do companies pay to use this distributed research? ... and I hate ads .... I suppose i wont be looking at them ... but it'll be niggling me there at the back of my mind ... "that screensaver is showing ads, using my bandwidth" .... it bothers me a bit:(

My best advice to you is to spend some time reading through the forums at http://forum.grid.org, especially the faqs. I don't use the screen saver so I'm not sure what ads you mean, but I think the client only connects to upload/download work units when its ready and doesn't 'stream' adverts down. Theres a couple of tiny adverts in the app if you open it on the info page but I've rarely seen them change.
