i'm not sure if this is the right forum, but ...

last week a teenager killed another teenager over a row about a mobile phone. it was tragic without justification. however, over the weekend one man claimed that violent computer games and hash smoking were to blame for the incident. it might be upsetting for some people to discuss this incident but as a lot of boards members are into gaming and the occasional spliff (for medicinal purposes? please don't let cops be online!) this thread might give us all the opportunity to voice our opinions - is this a ludicrous outlook on teenage crime in general? can we blame violent computer games/tv shows and the use of recreational drug on this type of behavioiur or are the middle aged figures of society just looking for a scapegoat?

can hash smpking/computer games etc be blamed for violence/crime among teenagers and 1 vote

Im from mountmellick, and knew Darragh reasonably well.

There is no way anyone can seriously blame Violent Video Games and more importantly, Dope, for the behaviour of the b*stard who did it.

The person, who everyone knows is guilty, was, to put it simply, a skanger b*stard.

You mat have heard that. shortly after the killing, he began bragging about it to his friends* , who didnt believe him at first.

Im probably a lot more fond of the unhealthly regular spliff/cone that the criminal, and probably play more violent games in a week than he's played ever, and yet I know, It would take something a LOT more serious than an unpaid for mobile phone, for me to even contemplate hurting anoher person with a weapon of any kind.

To make matters worst, it now appears the murder weapon was stolen from the Community school.

The criminals parents have moved out of their house, most desks in the school are scrawled with "I HATE ***********"

Truly, the criminal will never have a proper life again.

Are the people mentioned looking for a scapegoat? In my opinion, no they are just trying to make sence of this terrible tragedy.

Something has to be done about unprovoked attacks and the general attitude of knackerism and that the Irish Culture has been spawning for so many, many years.

That is how it sounds. People always look for things to blame in these situations, it's a natural reaction.

Its the usual kneejerk reaction to a shocking event.

Remeber how the Hungerford massacre was the result of a Rambo fixation or the dealth of Jamie Bulger was down to Childs Play 2?

All crap of course both events were the result of ppl who had gone "off-line" but no-one had noticed or been willing to intervene. I wont comment on the Mountmellick case as I don't know anyone or even the location involved. But I'm sure it'll turn out the killers own life and behaviour are not as straightfoward as ppl belive right now.

    Mike.

its rediculus to say that smoking a bit of doob will give ye violent tendencies.

the things people say in this country amaze me. this country is full of alcos yet that is okay cos alcohol is a perfectly taxable drug.

there is no way in hell that a stoned person could be violent at all. they would be way to chilled to even think about it. 'i would kick the **** out a ye but im baked and i cant move'.

does anyone remember prime time (i think it was prime time anyways) where they showed footage of pissheads knocking lumps out of people in temple bar? they were unprovoked attacks. why is nobody asking questions about alcohol?

imo alcohol causes more violence than doob ever could...

Wether you know of the area or not you can't mcomment on what happened. I spent time with that kid. He was in a bad situation. his mum and dad were fighting for his attention and he was fighting for a bit of attention in the own. Then this Horrible thing happened.....

Let this child rest in peace and let his family find themselves.

Darragh we pray for you every day...

While it might seem that way from anecdotal evidence, smoking cannabis has been medically linked to psychotic episodes.

Arguably that is because more people drink alcohol than smoke cannabis, and they do so at more regular intervals.

Lets blame video games for everything. The fact that they get there ideas from real life has nothing to do with it. Im sick of ppl blaming video games and music for all the problems in the world, somebody needs to tell these ppl to shut up and take a look at the real world.
