windscreen leaking

the windscreen on my car (peugeot 106) is leaking - got in it the other morning to find a large puddle in the passenger seat.

I went to the local autoglass place thinking I could get them to take it out and reseal it back in again, but they say it will almost certainly break when they take it out and I will then have to pay for a new windscreen (€200 or so)

anyone know anything about this sort of thing - are they trying to take me for a ride?

It can be done without breaking it... have done it myself. It's not a nice job (takes 2 people and a bit of wire about 45 mins to cut the seals), and that's why they fobbed you off.

check if your motor insurance covers windscreen damage.
You could end up replacing the whole lot without affecting your NCB

WARNING - While claiming may not effect your existing NCB, many companies refuse to quote new business to those who have claimed off their insurance for any reason, usually over the previous 3-5 years. So your free Windscreen could tie you in to your existing insurer for some time.

On Topic - why not just Silicone up the leak? Cost you about €5:D

Just one point on who replaces the glass; shop around.
In the past 2 weeks, car windscreen (on a Sunny) was smashed outside the house by a few vandals. Four cars done that night. I rang up insurance company to make a claim, they told me I wasn't covered for windscreen breakage. So I rang around for a few quotes:
Autoglass E 411 (cannot recall it this included VAT, but suspect not)
    All Weather E212 + VAT
    Westside Windscreens E160 +VAT

So I went with cheapest. Sorted out the insurance company (their clerical error) and claim went in last week.

I had a leak in a Vectra years ago. When I went to an Opel dealer they gave me same story that the windscreen might break when removing it to replace sealant. They rang me up that day to confirm they broke the window (that'll be 200 quid please, ha ha!). Didn't fix the leak which turned out to be leaking power steering. Stupid fu(kers for not figuring that one out, but smart b@$tard$ for conning me out of another 200 quid.

no this is definitely the windscreen as it is leaking in at the top where it meets the roof

I don't have windscreen cover - might try the silicon sealant route.
