xmms keeps fscking up

Start it by clicking on an mp3 and it opens then closes immediately. Start it from the command line and it says it can't allocate -23458374156 bytes of memory (minus 2 gigs).
I removed my /home/pickarooney/.xmms directory and reconfigured xmms, it worked again for a week or so, and now it won't open again. I can use xine to play mp3s but it's not very conwenient.
I tried to remove xmms, but rpm gave me a huge list of dependent packages and stopped the deinstallation.

Is there any way of removing it safely and reinstalling? (mandrake 9.1)

Hmm, that minus number is probably some sort of integer overflow.

Try deleting all the Visualisation extensions for xmms in /usr/lib/xmms/Visualization

Nerp, still getting it. The exact message is

    GLib-ERROR **: could not allocate -2147475456 bytes

Forgot to mention that for some reason (my amateurish installation procedure in the beignning) when I launch xmms from the KDE Start Menu it never loads, never has.

Going to try removing packages one by one.

Try starting Gnome, instead of KDE.

    See what happens.

Maybe you have some sort of broken glib install.

er, too late, I whacked it and reinstalled - all fixed now, no more glib comments and even the menu entry works. another pointless panickarooney thread draws to a close leaving noone the wiser.

for my sins I successfullly installed a router with two PCs yesterday, and converted my wayward friend to the ways of the peng-a-weng.

if in doubt => reinstall. That's bad linux user practice!

    If it works, it's good.

hmmm xmms has been a bit odd with me off late, not the same problem as yours however. Telling me it can't play the next song on a playlist and then when I manually click play it plays it. Another time recently it just refused to play anything and I had to logout to get it to work proberly. No errors were given.

oh well at least it plays most of the time.
    A.
