Amiga's

Anyone out there remember the Commodore Amiga's?
Seriously it was the first computer I had and at the time it rocked my world. What with Street Fighter and Golden Axe (Go Golden Axe Go!), it was amazing. And, AND it had it's own OS. What more could you want?

I'll admit I didn't have one of the early models (it was a 500) it had what, about 8MB of RAM? Maybe not even that. Didn't have a monitor for it, just tried, and I'd like to stress the try to hook it up to the T.V. It was great all the same.
As I said before, anyone else remember their old Amiga's? Still use them?

As wild_eyed mentioned get yourself WinUAE the Amiga Emulator for the PC. It plays almost every program/game ever made for the Amiga:) You'll also need an Amiga Kickrom and the games etc come in the .adf format. The first Amiga 500 came with half a meg of ram. The Amiga 500+ and A600 had 1Mb and the A1200 had 2mb and up depending on the package.
The Amiga was an excellent machine and I've lost hours to Speedball 2, Chaos Engine, Frontier Elite II, Dune 2, Supremacy, Arabian knights, Vroom.....(list could go on and on;) ) Any problems setting up the emulator you can post on boards Emulation Forum or PM me.

Ahem. Not all as retro as you might think. :) Amigas are on sale with 800MHz processors at the moment...

And I've had an Amiga for as long as I can remember. Started off with the ol' 500, later got a 1200, which I went nuts on. It's currently in my room in Galway, in a tower, with accelerator card, 16 megs of RAM, a 24 speed CD drive, 400 Meg HD, and pots of games and stuff. :D

There it is there, on the left, at NUIG's Rag week retro gaming session last march... :)

Yup, over here *holds up hand
Had a 1200, great machine, AGA 32bit graphics.
It was a big step up from my Amstrad CPC, I think I may still have it back at home, along with its games and software, hope nobody threw it out - may just try and resurect it. I loved that Trolls game, it had the best graphics of any game/system back then. Wouldn't mind another go at it, is that amiga emulator able to play original Amiga floppy disks ? Maybe it's dependant on the floppy drive, as I know the disks had a weird format.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

If I recall correctly, you can either download disk files somewhere, or there's some form of converter which will pop the floppies on your PC's hard disk.

Blech, I think people might have gotten the wrong idea. Though I referred to my Amiga in the past tense it's not gone. I still have it tucked away.
Gonna try it out this weekend and see if I can't get it working. :p

yeah I had an Amiga 600. It was the chief had loads and loads of games Street Fighter 2 was deadly and Speedball and Cannon Fodder and and . .. . .they were deadly!! and what about the program that let you type in english and it would say it in a robot voice - deadly!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,468 ✭✭✭Lex_Diamonds

Street Fighter 2 on the Amiga was far from "deadly", infact it was one of the most horrible ports of a game ever.

Team 17 had a SF2 clone which was alot better, however the name escapes me right now.

    I owned at Atari 520stfm! :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

I suspect you're thinking of Body Blows.

That was cool. There was a Kossack in it. :D

I still have it, too. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 221 ✭✭MrBigglesworth

Ahh yes, Cannon Fodder was great, could only get to a certain level though and kept on getting killed.
Premier Manager 2 was another Amiga classic, I would play a two player game with my mate at maybe 5 in the evening and go on till 5 the next morning.
    Must get emulating!

As yes, I was one of the few select people that went down the Atari ST road too. Remember the first game I got Mercenary, ah the memories.

Wow stfm. I suffered with a 360k floppy for years (520 ST) before upgrading floppy disk and RAM. Anyone used to go to that club in the Ormond Hotel on Sunday afternoons?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,894 ✭✭✭TinCool

Yes I certainly did, man I picked up so many automation and medway boys discs there it wasn't funny. Those were definitely the days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭fatherdougalmag

And the null-modem games of Falcon? See Morgan was/is working in Peats.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,225 ✭✭✭Scruff

ah yes. still have the 1200 in my room back home. although its in a press now with my 128k specie. still use winuae every now and again. in fact i think i'm just getting the urge to play the first multiplayer fps game i ever played all over again: Bloodwynch.
    ahhh..those were the days..

Admin I know this is warez we're talking so you should in fact shut this thread down now but in reality is anyone gonna class 15 year old games that you can't buy anymore as warez?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

    Probably.

    Funny thing, copyright...

Still have my Amiga500, as well as my C64 and 2 Spectrum 128k's with hundreds of games for all of them...

I even had a copy book full of coding that I designed which would have been used to make DOOM for the spectrum... And then, the adapter fried as they do...
Made countless Text / Graphic Adventures for the C64 (C BASIC was a wonderous thing back then) and then, as for the Amiga... Well, you couldn't do much with it, but there was the "SEUCK" (Shoot Em Up Construction Kit) which was great...

Amiga was most definately one of the best systems I owned...
Zool 1 & 2, Myth, Lemmings, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge, StreetFighter & MortalKombat, Putty, Knightmare, SwitchBlade, Alien Breed 1 & 2, Space Hulk... Jesus, the list of classics go on...

I lost all my emulator files recently after I decided to reformat...
Had hundreds of games and files for all of the above, so once I get back net access from home I'll do another search...

Also, don't forget there's an Emulator forum for those of you who need 'specific' files or links. They're all the 'LEGAL' type, though...

    Ahem.

Ever tried AMOS? Fantastic little BASIC language that was really quite nifty. Graphics adventures, Operation Wolf style shooters (I called my game NastyBlasty. I was young, you see...), Duckshoots... All these I made at one point. I tried making a Project X type shooter too, with a flying frying pan that shot sausages at evil fried eggs with glowing yolks. But it was a bit beyond me... :(

And yes, SEUCK was great fun. Ever find a SEUCK game called Smurfhunt? The little blue beggars got exactly what they deserved... :)

I loved my A1200... trying to find all the cables for it atm. Syndicate was a favourite, as were Theme Park, Dune, Worms, Shadow Warrior, and so on.

Used to read Amiga Power a fair bit back in those days. Even won one of their competitions. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭carbsy

    The days!

Started off with a Commodore16 in 1985 , then onto an Amstrad CPC464 , 6128 , A500 and finally the A1200 which is sitting here right next to me. :) I still use the A1200 on a weekly basis for Sensible Soccer and Kick Off 2 of course. ;)

    carb.

I got a letter printed in Amiga Format once. They doctored it horribly so it made no sense, though...

Hmm. I should be down in UCC at the end of January for Warpcon, and I do indeed have such a device somewhere in the basement. I'll have to make sure I didn't cannabalise it for parts though...

ha, had the ould A500+.... superb piece of work (i remember my next door neighbour had the A500 and i always used to slag her and say mine was better because of the +)

Had a sh1t load of games, but someone threw out the keyboard (which was the machine!!) afew years ago, b*stards.

Heres some good news for those interested. GAME on grafton st (where I used to work) have a A1200 or A2000 as well as an Amiga CD player in their old stockroom (at the very very top of that building). I was going to buy it but decided not to for afew reasons. firstly the cables were missing and secondly the manager said i could have it at the scan price. which was 252yoyos. what an a$$hole. no, really.

Had an A500, way ahead of it's time. Some great games that used to keep me up all night including the original Championship Manager, Panzer Kickboxing, IK+ and Sensible Soccer.

What's so effing marvellous about that? 99% of personal home computers past ~1983 had their own OSes.

Some good choice of games, that. Sensi was, and still is, a blast.

Panza Kickboxing is very good. The idea of being able to pick and choose your kick and punch arsenal was cool. The rotoscoped animation of Andre's attacks was also a nice touch.

it still does (www.amiga.com) was very tempted to get it, just for the memories, but Id be afraid it sucks (Im sorry for saying that), and I remember reading about it ages ago and it did. Its new games titles included GTA...thats GTA 1.
It reminds me of the Mac OS's, or should I say Mac reminds me of Amiga....i think its just the 'A' button......
The OS could be a good business OS..... they seem to have forgotten their gaming heritage and moved into the office.

anyway,.... yes they have a machine (i think) out called the AmigaONE and an OS called AmigaOS4. I think Gateway bought them from Commodore in the 90s, but I dont know who picked them up when Gateway went to hell... but theyre still floating around, waiting until the sony, microsoft and nintendo all produce super-strong machines that are so powerful the consume the entire respective companies, the Amiga will save the gaming world yet again wth IK + 2: Curse of the Dropping Pants and Lemmings 23: For God sake, not more f*ckin Lemmings.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

Gateway did buy them, but they then formed a fairly seperate company with very loose ties to Gateway, so when they went they could still go on. The AmigaOne is being made by Eyetech, a third party company.

They're actually doing some pretty handy stuff with mobile phones, and home entertainment systems, too.

And AmigaDOS was fantastic. Along with Workbench, you had a useful OS that didn't crash because of the time of day, that was easy to use and still had an awful lot of power.

Loved Batman:The Movie on Amiga, the cool hook thing to go around corners i nthe batmobile :p

Also loved Golden Axe, Dynamite Dux, Rainbow Islands & Maniac Mansion...

I remember I had a demo of Captain Planet too, only had a sucky level with Mati, the guy with the Heart ring, no fun with that one hehe

"by your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!" :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,766 ✭✭✭robbie1876

The demos were on of the best thing about the Amiga. I used to get my PC friends around to watch (and listen to ) Jesus on E's. They would leave with their heads held in shame.

Just recently downloaded that demo for WinUAE, it still rocks!

Pity nearly every other game of a movie that Ocean made was basically the same game with different graphics... :)

And Captain Planet sucked leprous donkey balls. I cannot stress enough how truly awful it was.

W00t! Turns out a friend had a bag full of old Amiga games in his room for years, and let me have them! After I dusted the tobacco (at least I think it was tobacco...) off, I finally got to play Wizball for the first time ever! Got me hands on Switchblade, Batman, R-Type 2, Turrican...

    Bye bye, daylight. :)

Hrmm I dusted off my old amiga the other days, seems I have a dodgy floppy drive and I remember from before that the mouse was knackered.

Anyone have one or both of the above lying around, perhaps from a dead amiga? :)

If you're getting your Amiga's out I highly recommend the game Knights
    http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/marjola/games/design.shtml#knights

was released around '93 as freeware and it's a 2 player only (splitscreen)
get a mate around, get in the beers, put a piece of
cardboard up to split the screen it's the best laugh you'll ever have

I used an amiga for years with music tracker programs excellent system for a beginner to start into sequencing. I swapped it with an atari ST. still have it in my mum's attic it has an inbuilt midi input and output amasing stuff at the time. It was really bad for games and I never forgave myself for letting go of my precious. My brother & I bonded over two player Lotus challenge .....sniff!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,286 ✭✭✭SprostonGreen

I had an Amiga 500, with a half meg of ram.

I mucked up my leaving cert playing Shadow of the fu'cking beast !!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 269 ✭✭Jam

Had a 500+ with a whooping 2mb, you read that right, 2mb of RAM. Boo-yah! Got it out of the attic there, but the keyboard is foobared, can't play half the games. :( But a lot of great amiga games have dos versions, Dune 2, Premier Manager 2, Fronter Elite 2, etc. But I'm sure you're all aware of that. G'wan the aul win98 laptop!

Edit: Anyone ever play the PD game 'Scorched Tanks'?

Ahhh...... The Amiga..... The memories...... :)

I had an Amiga A500+ with 1MB of Ram. How cool was that, it could run better than any pc of the time with less components.

Its just a shame that Commodore went out of business and sold out to Compaq.

I spent many a night playing Elite 1 and 2, and even Syndicate, Speedball 2 and many more fun games on it.

I still think Amiga's are far more reliable than PC's and more sturdy too.

Think of it, your OS on a single floppy disk(not even High Density), and that had everything you could need.

Who needed a hard drive with that kind of thinking behind it.

Sheesh, I remember playing that game, think I got it off a magazine. And did the old cardboard down the middle too!
The one game that maybe I spent about two years solid playing with my mate though was Premier Manager 2. Absolutely fantastic!!

Quite a bit of the OS was actually on ROM chips, fully part of the system. That's the main reason things were so smooth and quick. Workbench was AmigaDOS, not just a pretty bolt-on graphical interface. And while things could still easily crash, you would at least be given an error code that you could work out, and fix things for the next time.

The lack of need for a hard drive eventually counted against it, though. I mean, come on, who really wanted to play Monkey Island 2 from 15 floppies? Once I got a hard disk I couldn't do without it. It's amazing what an Amiga with some extra kit is capable of...
