Anyone know if it's possible to get a fixed IP address for GPRS enabled SIM from O2, vodafone or Meteor? I'd like to be able to connect in through the university firewall for a project I'm doing and this would really help.

General web access usually means you get an address from a pool, if you want a fixed one you'll probably need them to set you up with your own APN and then give you your own public IP address. It could be done but I wouldn't think it'd be free.

This is not a service supplied to general end users but as per the original thread could be supplied to corporate's...

Well it's for a university project it's needed so it's sort of corporate. Do you know where I can get information on it?

    I enquired about it recently...

"Short answer is no. The APN is dynamic allocation."

By corporate, he means that you are willing to spend lots of money.

Lots of money ...... and have a range of seperate IP addresses allocated to your organisation, which would then have it's own unique APN.

Depending on how you connect to the GPRS network will depend on how this is managed at your own organisations end but here are the choices....

Direct link - Some kind of direct Leased, Frame or ATM connection between your organisation connected into the GGSN within the GPRS network

Internet VPN - Secured tunnel across the internet

L2TP or IPSec - Secured tunnel across the internet

but again this requires the operator to have sufficient volumes of traffic to make this a viable option hence why this is normally a corporate only service.
