How much is it to 'buy' or 'rent' a forum on boards, like the phantom one or something?

The only forums that people pay for are the commercial interaction forums.

    what like the blackknight ones?

ok, so how exactly do the likes of Phantom get their forums here? is that just public support like the other forums?

More or less. In the case of a "community forum" a community can demonstrate that they have a collection of people who need somewhere to discuss their collective interest/community/whatever rather than a typical forum which is for general discussion of a topic.

That's not a terribly lucid description of what I mean, but most of us know what it is when we see it I suspect.

yeah i think i get you. so the general forums are about general topics such as music or film etc. while the community forums might be about a perticular film or band, say The Doors, if you felt there was enough people interested and enough to talk about to validate a forum.... or did i miss the point?

That's close enough, although it'd be more likely that the society for the discussion of the doors would use the forum for both discussing the doors and organising their next american tea party fund-raiser.
