hey all just upgraded to mandrake 9.2 - previously had the above modem working grand on 9.1 but lost the driver in the upgrade, now the only driver i can track down (www.linuxant.com) is limited to 14.4k

i found another one zipped but installing it means finding the kernel source (which aint included on the CD's) i downloaded it and then it started saying **** bout recomping the kernel to get the modem to work - haha as if!!

anyhow if anyone knows of any drivers running at 56k in an rpm PLZ giz a shout - i fear ill be returning to windows if i cant find it.

    thanks
    luke

PS the only good thing bout this is that when i use windows now 56k seems SOOOOOO fast!

I'd be very surprised indeed if the kernel source isn't on those CDs.
    Take another look.
What exactly did it say about recompiling the kernel?
Maybe you need to install make or binutils.
Using urpmi rather than rpm will get all those installed for you.

The modem driver isn't distributed with the kernel because of
    an incompatible driver license.
The kernel rebuild required is trivial, and you DON'T have to recompile the whole thing unless you want to.
Once you have the kernel headers installed, the zipfile
should contain a script that will compile test and install the driver for you.

Last time I set up one of these modems for someone,
they were impressed that it was a V92 modem under linux,
while it was only a V90 under windows.
    Give it a shot!

yeah mandrake made a big balls up of the first releases by forgetting to include the kernel source, is it possible for you to just go back to 9.1 ?

Seriously?! No Source included, bad people!

Don't go back to 9.1, you've only got a tiny problem.
Change your kernel or preferably, build the driver yourself.
Also, the RPM you want will be released very shortly,
as soon as someone else has the same problem as you,
fixes it and bothers posting an rpm.
Lucent modems are popular, you won't have to wait long!

Do you still have the 9.1 CDs?
You can use the source and kernel from those.
Alternatively, did you back up your working kernel
    from 9.1 before upgrading?
Maybe it's still even on your hard disk.
If you did an upgrade rather than a reinstall, try
    ls /lib/modules
You'll have a directory there for each kernel installed.

Install the old kernel and the working ltmodem module
and boot that instead. You're not tied to using the kernel
    that came with Mandrake 9.2
You'll have to copy and edit a line or two in /etc/lilo.conf
    or /boot/grub/grub.conf, but that's all.
Even if you reinstall 9.1, you'll have a fair bit of work
to do to get it back to how it was.
You're better off doing a bit of reading and moving forward.

    Good luck,
    NiallB
