Whats the easy and most efficient way to do this?

Any tools that can make it handy?

Say updating apache and php is it a requisite to re-compile from source and add in any extra modules as needed or is there a more efficient manner to do this?

Used APT but unaware as to whether you can add in modules when installing the packages for passing specific parameters like installing mysql support.

Wondering is there anything handier if you are performing on lots of systems or is the only way to perform to use shell scripting?

Help greatly appreciated

I wouldnt call a gui efficient..

Any helpful input as to how to automate this on 100 systems or links to any useful good shell scripting sites ?

Not an answer to your question as such, but may be helpful anyway: I have one of my servers set up as an apt-proxy. Saves repeatedly downloading packages. Even working from CD, it means you can load the CDs once and forget about them.
