Some thing that puts more emphasis on strategy and tatics rather than resource collecting and tech trees.

Im thinking someting along the lines of the formations and stuff in Cossacks and Homeworld 2 but without their resourcey bits.

    Any one have any suggestions??

However anything with hexes may be taking it a bit far!! Im looking for a happy medium here!

Combat Mission : Barbarossa to Berlin

Both sides order their troops around, then you get 60seconds of action as both sides try and do whats been asked of them. Very tactical, no resources, great for PBEM games.

Any of the Close Combat games

Just historical forces, its realtime, but there're not RTS rush around the place type game. Lots and lots of 3rd party mods ranging from simple graphics changes to complete campaign mods.

If you want a decent RTS without any resource management, you could do far worse than Ground Control. It's been out about 2 years now, but it still has some of the best graphics I've seen in any RTS (although maybe nostagia is distorting my memory of how it looked :) ).

Very well balanced gameplay, and units can gain experience over campaigns. You'll find yourself preciously guarding each unit, cause once they're gone, you can't replace them. No resource managment, no building units or defences. You just get an assault force, and (try to) kick ass.

I hate resource management too. You may as well be playing championship manager as homeworld. Because of this I wasn't playing rts games at all much until my mate showed me Age of Mythology .

Now there are three resources to look after but you'll get used to it and it's one hell of a fun game. Trying to get an army together first and it's a race through the ages. [Don't rush too quickly, mind] - I think you may be pleasantly surprised if you get into it.

This thread has most good RTSs in it

If you dont like resource collection I strongly advise you get Ground Control.

I always ment to play that, but none of the Warhammer games work on Windows XP, I have Chaos Gate and Final Liberation both here, but I cant play either, shame really, because their both superb games :(

Another vote for Ground Control. I saw it in Smith's last week for 6.99 or something like it.

Assuming ww2 is your thing, check out "Blitzkrieg"; no resource gathering, totally about formations, strategy, proper use of troops, artillery - hell even armour penetration. It's not as mad as it sounds - it's actually lots of fun.

Axis and Allies is a great game. It takes hours to play. Great for a night in. Even more fun if people are "creative" with the rules.
