Its a lot clearer in the book....

Fr. Merrin is abroad on a dig in the middle east....where he realises that there is a confrontation awaiting him...an old evil back again...

although not introduced....other charcaters later in the film give the relevant info

    >> the Bishop talking about Merrin at a dig, and about the Last Exorcist that nearly killed him...

It makes for Fr Merrin's later appearance in the film a lot more substantial...he has very little dialoge but Max Von Sydow excellent acting combined with this opening scene means that his character is expressed with every glance, every movement and makes for an amazing performance...

i think the exorcist is an excellent film, especially for the time it was made, it still scares people half to death even now, years after it was made

It took me years to pluck up the courage to watch that film, but it was a BIG let down .... The only part that freaks me out is Linda Blair's face when she's possessed!!

I thought the documentary The Fear of God about the film was much better than the film .... I watched that 1 night when the flick was re-released!! Scared the be-jebus out of me!!

Film scared me the first time I saw it, not as much as the Omen though.

Read the book of the Excorcist, couldn't sleep for hours after finishing it
