Earliest time Christmas trees go up...

    This REALLY bugs me.

I think we should have a competition on who sees the earliest christmas decorations go up in someone's house.
    Not shops obviously.

There is a house in my estate which has the Christmas tree up and decorated, little Santa & snowmen figurines in the window and those tacky lights on the outside wall.
They went up last Saturday 8th November!

I really want to call around and shout at them.
    Why do they do it?

    prob have kids?
    really like xmas?
do it cause it annoys people?
to be the first one s to get them up?
so they wont have to do it in the pisses of rain?

they should be like normal people how dare they be different!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,513 ✭✭✭Sleipnir

Well I think their kids would be bored of Christmas by the time it comes around. The tree has been up for almost 2 months already.
Christmas now last about a quarter of a year which I think is ridiculous.

to be the first one s to get them up?

    Is there a prize?

so they wont have to do it in the pisses of rain?

Have you looked out the window in the past few days?
Does it rain in your living room?

they should be like normal people how dare they be different!

"Hey guys, I going to celebrate christmas on St. Patrick's day. It's cool to be different!"
"That's not being 'different'. That's being stupid"

The Halloween boundary was shattered this year by none other than Hampers and Roses scratch cards.

I saw the ad several times at the end of september/beginning of october.

In a club a fortnight ago they played that god awful Mariah Carey song and the fairytale of new york. It's gone beyond a joke.

In most of the shopping centres I went to you had to climb through christmas decorations to get Halloween stuff.

The only thing I'm going to say about putting up a christmas tree a month early is console yourself with this. If its a real tree which if the house is fully decorated it probably is then chances are in a month and a half it will most likely be shedding its needles.

Nothing say's Merry Christmas like a Christmas tree with Leprosy.

Small consolation indeed but hey I'm a small minded person.

The Burlington Hotel has had their christmas trees on top of the porch of the main entrance since mid October!

Also, it may be off the subject but this piece from a previous poster is a bit racist -

I dunno about you sour bastards, but i for one really enjoy christmas. The smell of a christmas tree, or the way it makes a room feel cosy is reason enough to stick one up early.

What the **** have you got against your neighbours moving decorations? Or your neighbours sticking their tree up early?

If these are the sort of things that get you annoyed then id be kind of worried, what do you do when you run out of toilet roll?

2 weeks before Christmas the tree goes up here. 6th of January it goes down and someone always has that awful Christmas channel on

Who said they didn't like christmas? I love it but I don't like the fact that is has turned into a 3 month event.
Sure, if it's that good, why don't we just have Christmas all year round?

Aye, right - like it's racist to say "black". Cop on to yourself, Lena. Thanks to people like you we won't be able to order cars in pearlescent black soon - they'll have to be just really really dark white.

Regarding christmas trees, I noticed a family arranging lights and tinsel on a tree through their living room window on my way home recently. It made me very angry to see this, so I stopped and rang their doorbell. I rushed in as soon as the door was answered and tore the tree to the ground and snapped off several branches. I think they got the point I was trying to make.

    Indeed.

Whys it "humourous" to say a white rappers the best, but "racist" to say a blck golfers the best?

Oh, ok, i'm alone in my thoughts. How very liberal of you.

in my opinion, the 'joke' should probably read something like this

You know the world is going sane when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America's Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn't want to go to war.

You know the world is going insane when the the most powerful man in America is named 'Bush'.

    back to topic

Yes, celebrating Christmas on Paddy's day is stupid. But what these people have done is start celebrating it in November. Not stupid. Just because they enjoy the Christmas spirit doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them. Live and let live.

my mam won a hamper with those tickets last week, hopefully there's a decent amount of drink in it!! :D

1st of December is early enough to put up the Christams Tree, though it's usually about the 12th or 13th before anyone puts it up in our house.

I love christmas, but I hate the way Christmas Day feels like an anti-climax because of how early the decorations are put up all over the place!!

I was in town yesterday & couldn't believe that they had the Cristmas Tree and Lights up in the Ilac Centre!!

At home, we put the tree up on the 2nd Saturday of December [after spending the day killing each other in town doing the shopping] & it comes down again on the 6th January!!

I'm going to try & stay away from all shopping centres and city centres until Saturday 13th December & see if that changes how Christmas Day feels

Whats your problem ? if they want to get festive early so what ! cant understand why anyone would understand christmas , actually the only reason I can think of is if they had a bad experience around christmas as a child OR didnt have great family relations , I love christmas though , nice food , presents , good tv , a tree in your sitting room :D tis the season

What ever happened to the original tradition of putting your tree up at Christmas eve
So as to have a famliy event
rather then all down the boozer getting wasted

The only problem with putting the tree up on Christmas eve is that it has such a short lifespan. The nicest time is the run-up to Christmas, it's nice to have the place looking festive a week or 2 before the 25th. The week after is a bit depressing, considering everyone is broke and all we've got to look forward to is going back to work/college and bad weather!

we would lose that competition, our tree in our house doesnt go up until around the 22nd, 23rd whenever school ends

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,084 ✭✭✭✭Stark

We generally put ours up a week before Christmas.

We usually put the tree up around the 15th or so.... depends on when my Da gets it really.... Christmas in our house has 3 birthdays within a week (dec 28th and two on jan 3rd) so the tree stays up until the 6th...... and I noticed last year that not that many Dublin homes had the light in the window on Christmas Eve compared to the country folk..... whats that al about?

I'll be putting the lights up on the outside of the house and the tree in the garden in the next week. Purely 'cos the weather is still that li'l bit warmer and I've less chance of freezin an arm or leg off hanging outta the tree/roof!

They won't be switched on 'til after the first week in December.

    It is what it's.
