    I know that for a crossbow, you have to be a member of a recognized archery club...

    hmm....this'd be just a primitive bow. i wouldnt think you'd need to be a member of a club or need a license for one...

    Best of my knowledge:
    Cross Bows have to be licensed regardless
    "Long" Bows are unrestricted, be they recurve,longbow,compound,Chinese or Mongol!

    On licenses – for pelt guns apparently (or should I say, I’ve been told) you can’t legal own a handgun-sized pelt gun in Ireland, and if you have a rifle-sized one you must also have a gun license.

    Does any one know for certain if this is true?

    peltgun or airsoft hand guns are illegal, know some one who bought one abroad and went to see if he needed a license for it here and Mr garda said thanks son i'll be taking that.

    pelt rifles/ air rifles you need a license for.

    its an offensive weapon under the firearms and offensive weapons act 1990

    FIREARMS AND OFFENSIVE WEAPONS ACT 1990 - SECT 9
    PART III - OFFENSIVE WEAPONS

    Possession of knives and other articles.

    Section 9(4)

    proving which shall lie on him), has with him in any public place—

    ( a ) any flick-knife, or

    ( b ) any other article whatsoever made or adapted for use for causing injury
    to or incapacitating a person,

    he shall be guilty of an offence.

    section 4 (b) covers a bow and it carries 5 years

    The ans to this is yes it is true a pellet gun is classed as a firearm in Ireland also just looking at the act I thibk it also covers bows
    so my earlier post my not be quite correct but they are both illegal

    FIREARMS AND OFFENSIVE WEAPONS ACT 1990 - SECT 4
    Extension of Firearms Acts to crossbows and stun guns.

    4.—(1) In the Firearms Acts, 1925 to 1990, "firearm" means—

    ( a ) a lethal firearm or other lethal weapon of any description from which
    any shot, bullet or other missile can be discharged;

    ( b ) an air gun (which expression includes an air rifle and an air pistol) or
    any other weapon incorporating a barrel from which metal or other slugs can be
    discharged;

    ( c ) a crossbow;

    ( d ) any type of stun gun or other weapon for causing any shock or other
    disablement to a person by means of electricity or any other kind of energy
    emission;

    I think the important bit is any shot bullet or other missile can be discharged this would seem to clearly include bows
