    Hi All,
Here's a nice one for ya, I hadn't check my e-mail on an indigo account for abount a month, then when I did check the mail I doscovered that I had 1,100 mails. I've been getting about 25-35 spam mails a day to my account.
I tried unsubscribing etc. but of course that doesnt work, I'm using outlook xp and I've set up a load of filters for keywords but now they just spell works wrongly or put spaces inbetween charachters, so my rules are more or less usless at this stage.
So can anyone reccomend a good mail/spam application to filter this crap out ?

BTW does anyone know the legal implication of getting spamed with material that may be illegal in this country ?
    (I'm not worried just curious)

    Thanks,
    Monk

unsubscribing just confirms that your address is live :(
some spammers even use abuse@domain.tld as a way to collect addresses.

I have a plug in for outlook imaginatively called outlook spam filter which filters about 90% and can send "bounce" mails back to these addresses.
So does this look like a good idea or are there any better ways ?

btw I also forgot to mention that some of the spam now tries to infect your pc (through ie exploits) when opend in outlook (html view) then other try to get you to use a dialer , nasty especially for "normal" users who wouldn't know whats going on.

and heres the reall killer i'm getting spammed by a company that are trying to sell an app to prevent spam !! :ninja:

Sending bounces back to spammers is not a good idea, as a lot of the time the 'from' address is not real so you'll just create even more mail bouncing around.

The anti-SPAM app email is one of the oddest pieces of SPAM this year to date

yup.. i had a hell of a time with spammers the last few days for a company's networks we look after, a quirk in a previous version of mdaemon was to blame..

they seem to be getting better in general!

just try to stay away from the .com domains

I find the SpamAssassin rules/bayes/razor-agents combination to be quite effective, although some of the tricks that spammers use to get their "pills & porn" mails through are quite ingenious and getting more so every day. I run spamassasin on a box with ~300 users, with Exim as the MTA and procmail as the MDA. The users can put a procmailrc in their home directory to process their mail through spamd as it comes in (better to leave these decisions up to the individual user), and then redirect it to folders or to /dev/null, based on the headers that SA tacks on.

I would recommend Spambayes also. It uses its spam-blocking method based on the probability theorem of 18th-century mathematician Thomas Bayes. This technique uses observations of known outcomes to update estimates of the liklehood of a hypothesis.

    Just downloaded http://www.spambayes.org - nice

can you save the rules and import them into another copy of outlook ?
eg: I've got about 15,000 junk emails for it to learn...

RE: It uses its spam-blocking method based on the probability theorem of 18th-century mathematician Thomas Bayes. This technique uses observations of known outcomes to update estimates of the liklehood of a hypothesis.

The program has a database of words, and each has a score
When an email is moved to the Junk folder the score for rach word in that mail goes up. If you move an email OUT of the Junk folder then the score goes down. When a new email arrives it's words are looked up in the database and the "average" score is worked out - if it is high it goes to the Junk folder - if it is Low it is left in the inbox - in between it goes to limbo the Junk Suspects folder..

Despite all the research that has been done on symantics / order of words in coherent sentences - filtering based on the occurance of words is still better than any yet based on grammer !

You could also use Qurb another good filter.

    @Capt'n Midnight
Yea the rules are kept in a database of sorts saved under the users profile - in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\SpamBayes

Forgot to mention that Mozilla Thunderbirds built-in filtering schemes are actually pretty good; you mark messages as junk and the adaptive filters train themselves.

Been using it for a few months and it's getting smarter all the time :)

Blacklisting support isn't available yet though, hopefully in the next release.

Eudora is a very good e-mail program which has a nice Junk filter. And by using it for your e-mail, you have the pleasure of not using a Microsoft product.

I've had good luck with both SpamBully www.spambully.com and spam bayes on my Windows machines for filtering my spam. If you use a Mac too I've also had decent luck with SpamSieve on my Mac's.

Or contact each spammer, get them to join your oddball religious group, etc, till they hang up on you.
