If you are going for a holiday then all you need is a passport. Immigration in shannon do give a grilling sometimes but I have always been ok on holiday trips, the only grilling I ever got was on a business trip. Once you have a return flight booked you will be fine. You will either get a visa waiver form to fill out in shannon or if your flight does not stop in shannon, you'll get one on the plane to fill out. It's a standard enough form, asks name, address, address you're staying in, passport number and a few other things.

As for flights you should shop around. I got a deal on flights with aerlingus but BA sometimes do nice deals and there are a few american airlines that fly from Dublin too. I sometimes go to www.go-hop.ie, enter in dates and see what airlines are flying to where I want to go. You don't have to book your flight on go-hop you can then go to the airlines website and see can you get it cheaper than go-hop.

    Have a nice trip!

I got it for 533 from Ebookers 32 days in NYC :)
I assume my passport is "machine readable" as its only a few years old but will check again on monday to make sure.

Didnt think it be this easy.

    thanks for reply.

if it's only a few years ole then it's machine readable but you don't need a machine readable one anyway
