DSL broken in Panther

Hi all, (long time no talk)

Just upgraded to MacOSX 10.3 from 10.2.8. My USB adsl modem no longer works. (IOL broadband)

    It's a Zyxel Prestige 630-11.

I've tried several times to install and uninstall the software, but no success.

It knows the modem is there - if I pull out the USB cable, it tells me that it has been disconnected.

Also, both LED's (usb and adsl) are on the whole time - even when the phone line is not connected. (uses PPPoE)

When I start up System Preferences, it does not detect a new port, as it should. Modem was working fine a few hours ago with Jaguar, so I guess there must be some conflict with Panther.

I have a RevB iMac with 256Mb Ram, the modem is connected to the computer itself, not via any hubs.

    Any thoughts?

    Tim

check out the Apple Knowledge base for other users with the same peripheral, or send a message to the manufacturers to say that they need to write a new driver.

Of couse you can't do that because you can't get online - unless you use the internal modem in the iMac. How is Panther on a rev B? I have a rev C with 320MB ram. I might try it in that if your experience is OK.

Tried loadsa sites/forums last night (via dialup!)
Nothing on Apple's site yet, but there's a similar thread on http://boards.iol.ie so I'm not the only one. Posted a message on Zyxels forum too, but no joy there either.

meanwhile I'm back at Jaguar :(

Panther was grand - bout the same speed (maybe a little faster) as Jaguar on this machine. Much slicker though - stuff tends to be in the right place - much easier to locate system preferences etc - I like the new finder too.

You've a bit more RAM, so that will help. Id say you should get it.

    timod/hughchal:
this has nothing to do with the dsl issue - I'l keep an eye out for that one - but I assume you can co-load Panther and Jaguar and switch easily between them ala OSX and OS9 for example?
Also, you did'nt hear of any issues with Panther and OSX Server which is on my second Mac, assume they will all work happily together?

not too sure what you're talking about tonky, but as regards co-running Panther and Jaguar, I think it's only possible if they're on separate partitions.

Hi. Disregard query. I meant could you switch back to Jaguar after installing Panther using the startup disk app in utilities. You've answered anyway, seperate partition or disk. cheers.

Just to back up the point about seperate partitions/disks...

I did an archive and install when going back to Jaguar, and it moved Panther to "Previous System"

I had loads of problems - applications wouldn't open! For some reason many apps were trying to use libraries in the panther folder to run.

As soon, as I deleted 'previous system' everything was fine... (and my DSL works again!)

Now that's worth knowing - ta!
Must have a poke around the Unix underlying OS-X one of these weeks !!
    Looks very familiar.
