Pants. Absolute pants. At the very least I thought the characters would be more entertaining.

He's hoping they don't do a sequel. Or worse, several more films.

    Pointless, waste of a film.
I love the comics, so I figured if they'd brought even half of that to the screen, then I'd still enjoy myself. Instead, we're given flat, dull characters in a ridiculous setting, with absolutely nothing resembling a plot to hold it together.

    Stunningly bad.

Throughout the production there were stories of Connery trying to undermine the director using his "Executive Producer" role so it was hardly surprising that the movie got screwed up.

Its interesting that the reason the film was picked up was because Fox execs saw the positive response and good storytelling of the comics. The comics have great characters and a great premise, so what Fox thought would be a good idea was to:
    a)Remove each characters personality
b)Make Nemo a Kunf Fu expert
    c)Add an American - Tom Saywer(sp?)
d)Remove the sexual tension btween Mina and Quartermain
e)Make the Invisible man boring and not perverted (which he kinda is in the comic)

The film's Ok, Dr.Jackel/Mr.Hide was done very well.
Depp gave a good performance and I enjoyed his encounters with Mina.

Btw, The Aussies (and I think the Germans) loved the film and it made enough money to warrant a sequel. It goes into production next year I think.

Complete crap. The CGI was painfully bad - yes I was in PAIN watching it. The storyline was dreary. The settings could have been interesting had more attention been paid to them rather than using them as backdrops for run-of-the-mill action set pieces. And having "an invisible man" rathar than "*the* Invisible man"

Johnny Depp wasn't in it, that was Stuart Townsend

I liked the film, for what it was, which was mindless fun.

    Agreed.

But I think you forgot one or two things...
Name making Mina a blatant Vampire, where the comic had a looming question mark above her head, so to speak. It was just something implied, and never shown, or spoken.

And in that respect, I feel the film has completely and utterly lost any form of restrain, or subtlety that the original comics showed. Not to mention that the writers simply didn't have any grasp on narrative with their utter butchering of the plot, and weak attempts on twists.

As far as Alan Moore goes, it's been shown that his work can be translated to film, and while not being entirely accurate, can be a great film. I speak of course, of From Hell.

But The League was just terrible. And utterly poorly scripted
I mean, ffs!? What on earth was the point of forming the league in the first place if M just wanted to get the samples from certain members. Would it not make more sense for him to track down each individual seperately? Especially seeing as he had already recruited Nemo, Skinner, and Mina. It was all utter stupidity, and implausable. At least in the comic M had reason for forming the league, as they pretty much took out a lot of his competition, and stole the device for his ship. Yet in the film, he sets them against his own men? Pointless. Utterly pointless.

k ive never read the comics so i dont know who the characters should have been, but was that american tosser with the rifle meant to be there? it seemed like the usual tacky "GO USA" rubbish being added on to so many films

I loved the way, in the film,
M turned from victorian mastercriminal to petty cockney thief in the space of a couple of scenes
. Summed up the film perfectly.
