    is there any limit to how long a thread can go on for if it obeys all the rules.

    It depends. there is a thread in the rock/metal forun that has been going on for the past year.

    however a thread may be locked i.e posters can no longer reply to it. if the posters constantly digress from the subject of the thread or if the same arguments are repeated and that there is no more relevant information to be posted on the topic that hasnt been posted before than the MOD will lock the thread. this happened with the "white racialist uprising" thread in the humanities forum.
