Hey lads, i'm sitting on a college network here and i'm trying to find the best means possible for searching for files on it. Routing around through peoples machines one by one doesn't tickle my fancy,

The thing is last year there was a macihine on the network, which ran a webserver that worked something like google. type in what your looking for and what type of file it is, and it would show the results of your search with what computer have it.

That computer is gone now and i can't remember the name of that piece of software, it was definitely freely available cause i went to the developers website at the time.

    Any ideas from anyone.

map the network drives onto the local machine, then search F, G, H etc

Ya, but it's a bit OTT, you have to mount numerous amounts of shares on hundreds of computers.

theres a good network monitor in etherboy and geoboy
    - http://www.ndgsoftware.com/
but they only offer 30 day trials of their software.
nice though, a lot of clever ICMP, SNMP and pinging.

edit: theres another tool that does port scans over a specified range, can't remeber its name. I'll try to remember it, but in the mean time you shoudl search for port scanners with added features.

Yup, that's what i'm looking for alright. It's not the exact piece of software the i was thinking of, but it's probably better.

    Cheers lad.
