I am sorry for starting this thread but I am thinking of changing my phone operator from 02 to Meteor.

    Does Number portability work?

has any one had any experance - good, bad or indifferant with it?

I switched from Vodafone to O2 without problems. The day after I switched, I went to the US and used my tri-band phone (on O2) without problem.

    Very painless.

    One little thing...

You know those call cards that have surcharges if you have a O2 mobile or a Vodafone? Some charge different amounts depending on what you are. They can only tell what you are by seeing your number, there is no system in place for these operators to know if an 086 is O2 or Vodafone yet.

Billing should be fine within the mobile operators but not without.

i did a number port with vodafone to o2 recently and i have to say it was a nightmare, it took me three days to get changed over, have to say depending on the network you are on, they are not keen on loosing customers, especially those who pay on time, regarless of their spending.

My phone bills were not huge but i would have classified as a good payer but it was a nightmare.

    Good luck

To be honest, there is a few horror stories but the majority of people have no problems at all.

I've ported a few phones. The majority went without any problems, Two were horror stories. Admittedly though, they were in the first few weeks.

You are making the worst possible move (i.e. away from O2). Two weeks ago O2 introduced a nasty twist for people who leave their network. Any O2 customer who dials your number after you leave gets a recorded message "The customer you have dialled is no longer on the O2 Network" By the time it gets to the second part of the message "Please hold while we connect you" the majority of callers have hung up.

This has been reported to ComReg. ComReg are apparantly going to organise a public consultation in order to address this issue.

That recorded message really is incredibly annoying and is a pretty blatant attempt by O2 to deter someone from porting off the network.. Especially considering that Vodafone just has a simple beep a the beginning of the call.

02 are apparently removing that message following complaints - should be gone in the next few days.
