Affordability of Wi Fi

I've just built a new computer and I'm going to pick up an ADSL modem and get it on the net. I'll be stringing wire about 20 meters across the house to get from my computer to the phone socket.

My father will also be getting a new laptop and we have the old PC and Fax machine on ISDN.

I'm just curious what sort of costs would be involved to use WiFi. It sounds very convenient.

The new laptop will probably have WiFi already eg: Centrino

check out www.irishwan.org/board www.dublinwan.org for general RF setups

Might want to look at getting a Wireless ADSL router with firewall built in.

If you have general questions about set up and the technology, have a look at http://www.vbnets.com ... you can buy stuff there too, but its top of the range stuff and charge top of the range prices. If you know what you want to get see if you can get it from komplett.ie, or if you are feeling adventurous you can pick up some stuff *really* cheap on ebay.....beware shipping and handling costs

Pop your head into www.irishwan.org, but i'm not sure what you can get to travel the distance between your desktop and the socket. But from your desktop to the laptop you'd need a wireless pci card, and a wifi pcmcia card for the notebook (if not already installed) .

an adsl modem/router with wifi integrated is only 169 on www.marx-computers.com and you can pick up a pcmcia wifi for card for not much more than 30 quid these days.

http://www.dsl-warehouse.ie/ is another good shop. Look at the wireless dsl routers section.

Thanks, there's lots of info there for me to mull over. Sir Linux's 169euro suggestion sounds pretty good. :)

you could have axed me Mr. molloy, i do have a wi-fi setup in here, it reaches all over the building from my desk, if as suggested you get a dsl router with wifi built in and a wireless pci card for the computer you *cough* built :p. you should have no problems networking in an average sized house :
