The idea is nice, but god the rendition is truly awful. Honestly, my mother could do a better job.

The map is probably drawn as a bi-product of SCATS – ie the fluidity data is derived from the stop line sensors at the SCATS controlled traffic signals. No traffic lights on motorways – therefore no flow data for M1 or M50 on this map.

While the map is better than nothing(!) – the appearance is poor and is lacking integration like everything else when it comes to travel infrastructure in Dublin. Dublin’s main street – the M50 is totally ignored because presumably (a) it is not in www.dublincity.ie territory and (b) there are no traffic lights on the motorway itself.

Zurich is capturing it’s motorway traffic info as well as downtown street data on http://www.zueritraffic.ch/ . Their map is clickable by area to zoom into streets for more detail, and if you click on a street you can see the current average speed of the traffic + the historic speed trend over the past 45 mins + the forecast speed of traffic in each segment of road space over the next 45 mins. They also show the number of cars per hour travelling in each direction and the history and forecast trend for this figure.

The colour coded forecasts allow traffic authorities to proactively monitor problem situations and take action to nip them in the bud (eg a double parked removal van in rush-hour traffic).

Check for yourself using your refresh button and look at the time on the image. It seems to be every few minutes during peak times and outside that who knows?

As an aside they were showing "British Summer Time" on this timestamp last week! Irish Summer Time has been legislated for since the Summer Time Act of 1923 (MEZ + 1).

They are now showing "GMT" which was replaced by UTC in 1928.
